"Forgetting lets you live without pain for a moment but remembering hits hard"

- Ally Condie, Crossed

_____

Karla Camila Cabello Estrabao was aged 17 when she was found dead in a local park on the 19th of December 2016. Her cause of death; suicide. It was yet unknown her reasoning behind her tragic death. There was no note. She was found hanging from a tree, dressed in white and carrying a notebook presumed to be her journal. Upon later inspection, it was confirmed that this was her journal and on the last page of her journal in messy handwriting was written, CHECKMATE! I HOPE YOUR HAPPY.

This was the information that led the police to a full blown investigation into the teen's case. Whilst it was being ruled a suicide, it was clearly provoked by a party or parties.

So far a significant headway had been made, after securing her laptop police had uncovered numerous death threats through Tumblr. The severity of each messaging growing with the time. The last one was from the night of the suicide.

Why don't you just go end yourself. If you disappeared the world would be a better place.

The officer in charge of this information showed no emotion as he continued to check her social media's. All plagued with inboxes of similar disgusting words. These were a key part in tracking down the first three players.

IP addresses were traced, histories were found and secrets were revealed. And by the second day of investigating they had already found three leads.

_____

On the third day after Camila's death, Normani woke up to rays of sun shining through the blinds. It was almost as if the world was happy to be without more people. Like it was laughing at Normani for mourning. She dragged herself downstairs to eat, she knew she had to but it was a struggle. The knowledge that she missed signs from her best friend hurt. It was like a constant screaming in her head.

"Hey honey, this came in the mail for you"

Normani couldn't even bring herself to smile at her own mother. Her best friend's funeral was being planned, an investigation into her suicide was happening, and she had to continue on as if nothing hurt her. Normani looked down at the envelope with messy handwriting, handwriting she knew too well. It was stupid of Normani to believe that she had been in one long nightmare that was finally over, that she was now awake and Camila would walk through the door at any minute, but she did imagine. She felt her stomach knit and heart twist as she realised it was all in her head. Camila was still gone, and nothing she did could bring her back to life.

It dawned on her what this was. Her parents mentioned never getting a proper note, just a scribbled mess in the back of her journal. Was this her suicide note? Why did she send it to Normani?

Carefully opened the letter as she gulped. What the letter said scared Normani, did Camila ever forgive her for what she had done. Or did she resent her for it?

Normani,

Surprise! Bet you weren't expecting this. If you're reading this then you're too late, I'm already gone and you my friend, are a reason why.

Normani had to stop reading as she held a hand over her mouth to muffle her sobs.

Don't beat yourself up over it, you were blinded by everything, by everyone. Popularity changed you Mani, you went from my best friend to practically a stranger. Let me tell you a story Mani, of what you failed to see. All that you missed and let's see just how much you love those friends of yours now...

Normani blinked back the tears as she grabbed her book bag and rushed out the door. For the first time in a long time, she had a purpose of going to school, she felt motivated. But not to learn, to discover the truth.
