Chapter 56: In My Mind

"I used to skip rocks a lot. Back when I was a kid. I'd go to the lake with my mother to avoid my dad when we knew it would be a rough night if we didn't leave. She taught me how to skip rocks and it's quite calming actually."
"I... can't skip rocks."
"Oh, it's simple. You want to find a flat rock; as flat as you can find. And flick your wrist as if you're throwing a frisbee, but with less aggression, and it should skip." He threw the rock along with his description for demonstration.
"I bet you can't skip the rock five times in a row."
"What if I don't?"
"I'll push you in the water."
"And if I do?"
"You won't."
"Wow okay, Katelyn, now I will just in spite of your pessimism." He threw the rock and it managed to skip five times. "YES! I DID IT!" And with that, Katelyn pushed him in. Travis laughed as he sat up out of the water and climbed out. He shook his head like a dog to get the water out of his hair, getting it partially on Katelyn.
"Hey, you're spraying me with the water!"
"You pushed me in even though I completed the challenge!" He sat next to her, jokingly angry.
"Aww, Travis I'm sorry." Katelyn places a light, quick kiss on his cheek. "I didn't mean to make you all grumpy. Does that help?"
"Yes, a lot." He says, smiling at her.
"I... I love you, Travis. Thank you for being here for me."
"Darling, there's no where else I'd be."
She leaned over and rested her head on his shoulder, hearing him suddenly speak,
"Alright well, goodbye."
And Travis faded away. She fell to her side on the bench due to the weight she was leaning on him.
"TRAVIS!" She sat up quickly and suddenly, her surroundings changed. She was in a hospital room, alone. It all flooded back in, all of the memories of what happened.
"H-holy crap; Travis... he's gotta be beating the hell outta himself over this..." She turned to her side and saw notes. She lifted the bag up and looked at the dates on the pages. She then read another notes date and her jaw dropped;
"...it's been a YEAR?" A doctor was passing the door and he saw Katelyn was awake.
"Y-you're... awake!" Katelyn was frozen still, in shock. "Oh... uh. You've been in a coma. For.... over a year."
"Irene help me... a YEAR..."
"I'll send another doctor in a moment to make sure you're all good to go and you're free. We can call your people and let them know you're up."
"Don't call anyone."
"Alright, let me know if there's anything I can do."
"Question, did... did anyone... visit me?"
He stopped and looked to her, "Every day, a Travis came by. Whether it was five minutes at a time, or five hours. He'd stay in the room over night and we didn't want to wake him up from his chair and tell him to leave, so we'd let him. He'd leave a note everyday, so I'd start reading."
"I know this is a cute, meaningful, and impactful part of the story but it's kinda creepy you'd watch me so closely."
He shrugged, "It's been over a year; it's hard not to notice. Anyways, I'll send a doctor in."
After a moment of checking vital signs and such, Katelyn was free to go. She gathered up all of her things and headed for everyone's house. She went to visit Nicole's house first. She knocked. As the door opened, Nicole was talking to someone inside,
"Just one second, Dante I-" She paused the second she saw Katelyn. "Oh my GOD KATELYN!" The two hugged. "You... You're up!"
"Yeah, I'm awake. I'm just saying hello to everyone."
"Well, I won't keep you then. "
"Uh, can you give me an update on what I've missed with you so far. I'll obviously hear it all in detail but I'd like an idea of what I missed. I mean, it's been a year."
"Oh, right, I just started... being near Dante more."
"Dating?"
"Its complicated."
"I'm sure it is. I'll get the full story later. See ya, Nicole."
"Bye, Katelyn."
Katelyn continued and visited a few other friends like Jeffrey, but found she set her travels to the guys house, which had Garroth and Laurence left alone, since Dante was at Nicole's. She rang the doorbell, hearing mutters behind the door. The door opened to Garroth with his arm around Laurence's shoulder.
"Uh... Hi?" She didn't know what to say. She kinda expected it from them, to be perfectly honest.
"G-Garroth! Your arm is on me! Now Katelyn's gonna go tel-" He froze, "Katelyn, you're out of the coma!"
"But you aren't out of the closet."
"Katelyn, I swear to Irene if you-"
"I won't tell anyone if you don't like, but you've been calling me 'Lady Katelyn' for god knows how long now and now I finally have something I can annoy YOU with."
"Please don't-"
"Like I said, I won't tell anyone. You guys do it yourself. I'm not telling everyone you're together because I honestly don't care enough. You do you."
"Thank you."
"No problem. I'll see you later, gbf." She smirks, knowing how annoyed he'd get, and walks away.
"kaTELYN I SWEAR TO -" Garroth shut the door mid yell. Katelyn sighed.
Its only been a few people I've talked to and it's already so much I've missed. How am I gonna catch up?
Regardless of her worries, she walked to Kawaii~Chan's apartment and knocked. The second the door opened, she was infested with hugs and how much she was missed from her.
"So what's new in the life of Kawaii~Chan in the past year? Any guys?" Katelyn asked, specifically to pester Kawaii~Chan, not expecting the blush to appear on her friend's face. "Wait, really?! WHO!?!?!?! Is it someone I know?"
"Yes, b-but you won't ever guess-"
"Is it Zane?"
"Heh heh"
"Really?! I'll need to annoy you about it later. I still haven't told Aphmau I'm awake."
"KATELYN~SAMA! GO TO HER! NOW!"
"Okay, okay, I'll go. Talk to you soon."
Katelyn went to Aaron's house, expecting Aphmau to be there. She knocked, once again. She heard steps come down from the stairs. Aphmau opened the door and froze for a second.
"It's... you're.... You... awake...."
"You mixed up your words a bit, Aph."
"ITS ACTUALLY YOU! " She tightly hugged Katelyn.
"Yes, I'm fine. Like always. Aph, have you been crying?"
"I... Just came from talking with Travis. He's.... uh, you..... There's...."
"What're you trying to say?"
"He... said he wanted.... He's in a dark place. He's been troubled since you've been gone."
"Troubled... how?" Katelyn knew how this was about to go. Or so she thought.
"Erm... why don't you turn around and see for yourself." Katelyn turned, confused, and made eye contact with Travis standing at his front door. At their front door. After a small freeze of them staring at each other they ran to each other. Katelyn crossed the street as Travis frantically ran down the stairs in front of the house. They met at the bottom of the stairs and went for a hug. They paused when they realized they were both positioned in a way they couldn't hug, went to change positions but still couldn't hug, then laughed awkwardly, realizing they just ruined the cliché running hug in every romance novel and show ever. After a moment of silence, Travis grabbed her and pulled her into a hug.
"Oh, Irene, I've missed you."
"I heard."
"What did Aph tell you?"
"Not nearly enough, but enough for you to need to explain."
"Why don't we go inside for a moment first? Just... sit together. "
"I'd like that. I'd like that a lot."
