It was strange how a promise could get lost. Camila was swamped with her work and Lauren was out every weekend with her job she finally received after countless attempts. Camila didn't mind that their interaction usually consisted of watching the new Gilligan's Island together while she memorized medical terminology, but with the end of the summer came the beginning of Camila's schooling season. Lauren loafed around the apartment, pecking out of the fridge and complaining about how cold it was going to get in only a few weeks, between shifts at the restaurant she worked at. She cooked more, at least, and she was really only unbearable until the Gilligan's Island came on. Camila's complaints were few.
She was merely silly at best, and intolerably needy at her worst.
"You think I'm as good looking as Tina Louise?" Lauren asked, leaning between Camila's legs, both of them crammed on the couch, Camila trying to jot down something about Shakespeare. The university was cruel and forcing her into English classes to make her well rounded. She had no interest in Shakespeare unless Shakespeare had written something on how to pass her chemistry class while still having time to write critical analysis essays.
"Anything is possible," Camila replied, resting the back of her book on Lauren's head, scrawling something on her legal pad. Lauren snorted indignantly, popping a pez from the dispenser in her hand. Camila heard the crunch of the candy as she chewed it.
"Watch this one. It's funny," Lauren insisted as the opening to the Gilligan's Island kicked in. When Camila didn't respond she knocked her elbow into Camila's leg.
"Lauren, I can't. I'm studying."
"You study all the time, come on and watch with me. I barely see your face because it's always in a damn book," Lauren whined, reaching blindly behind her to swat at the volume. Camila rolled her eyes and kept reading, pulling the book out of Lauren's reach.
"Go find something to do," she sighed, tapping her pencil against her chin.
"Let's fool around," Lauren twisted, looking at Camila who refused to make eye contact. "Come on," she jabbed. "Come on, let's make out or something."
"Lauren, what am I going to do when I tell my patients I can't help them because I was too busy having girlfriend's face buried between my legs?" Camila grumbled, trying to concentrate.
"I don't know. Your girlfriend is really good looking. She's really cute, and she drives a sweet car, and she can do all sorts of fun things." Camila became vaguely aware of the fingers walking up the back spine of her book and creeping over the edge. "If you cooperate I'll give you a pez," Lauren continued, clicking another candy out.
"You are absolutely depraved. I can't fool around with you right now," Camila groaned, tapping Lauren's forehead with the pencil. "Please go find something else to do before I lose my mind?"
"I already know what I want to do. I want you to come with me and we'll go on the bed and turn off the light and you'll let me put my hand in your pants."
Camila didn't gratify her with a response and Lauren pouted, resting her cheek against Camila's knee for a while.
"You doing anything this weekend?" she asked out of nowhere and Camila's brow wrinkled. She glanced up from her notes and resigned herself to giving Lauren her attention.
"You know I'm not. Why do you ask?"
Lauren turned back around, stretching her legs out, head pillowed by Camila's stomach while she watched TV.
"You probably wouldn't want to because you have a book to read."
"Lauren," Camila said, shaking her head. "What? What did you have planned? We just went out to the country two weeks ago."
