Camila twitched in her sleep, shifting so her arm wasn't caught under her chest, her feet stirring the nest of blankets at the foot of the bed. A siren wailed, muffling the careful clanks on the fire escape and she stirred slightly. There was a slight groan of the window casement as someone slid it up and Camila moved again, sighing.
Lauren was finished with her graveyard shift.
"Lauren," she rumbled, her voice thick with sleep, and there was the snap of Lauren pushing the window back down, walking across the room, stopping halfway to slip her boots off and kick them under Camila's nightstand. Camila groaned, the mattress moaning with her when Lauren sat down on the edge of the bed, rubbing her shoulder.
"You awake?" she whispered, and Camila shook her head.
"No, I'm asleep," she breathed, turning toward Lauren's touch, rubbing her face with one sleepy hand and cracking her eyes. Lauren smiled at her through the dark, stroking her damp forehead as the electric fan oscillated, ruffling her humidity-limp hair.
"You look awake to me..." Lauren continued, and her voice was low and calm, but Camila could hear the excitement simmering underneath. She was in one of those moods, it seemed.
"Someone is going to hear you one of these days. Or think you're trying," she paused, kissing Lauren back, "to burgle me."
Lauren smiled against her mouth and pulled away, the mattress squeaking as she stood and clumsily stripped her clothes, lowering herself back onto the bed, crouched over Camila, holding her in with her legs on either side of her hips. She ran her hands appreciatively over Camila's stomach, snapping the elastic on her underwear with a small pop.
Camila laughed, trying to roll her face away, but her hands were already wandering over Lauren's shoulders as Lauren leaned in, trying to kiss her.
"What time is it?" she asked as Lauren brushed her mouth over Camila's neck.
"Three," Lauren answered, and Camila shook her head, trying to move Lauren away with her shoulder.
"Lauren, stop, I wanna sleep," she whined, giving up so quickly she wondered why she even attempted.
"It's Thursday- you don't have class on Fridays," Lauren whispered, sealing their mouths together again. Camila kissed her back lazily, still waking up, her fingers skimming over Lauren's back.
"Did you miss me?" Camila continued, and Lauren kissed her chin, looking into her sleepy eyes.
"Is the day long?" came the reply and Camila smiled, framing Lauren's face with her hands, combing through her hair. Lauren ducked her head, and Camila opened her mouth, tongue slicking against the wet heat of Lauren's. Lauren pulled back and Camila followed, her head lifting off the pillow, but Lauren was too quick and had begun to work her way down Camila's neck, towards her bare chest.
"God, I missed you," Lauren said against the hollow of her throat and Camila hummed in agreement, fingers still tangled in Lauren's hair and sliding to the nape of her neck. "All shift I couldn't stop thinking about getting back here. Fuckin' going crazy all week..."
Lauren's hand slithered under Camila's waistband, and Camila grabbed Lauren's wrist and pulled her hand away.
"Lauren," Camila mumbled and Lauren nipped at the place where her neck met her shoulder before soothing it with her tongue. Had it only been a week? It'd felt like months. She'd only gotten a few hushed 'I love yous' into the payphone receivers at the bar; the rest of the time, Camila had been cramming for her summer midterms, and Lauren was working.
