June, 1966
There was something missing when Camila woke up, the warmth beside her gone, the bed cool beneath her touch. Music was pouring down the hallway into the open door of the bedroom, and Camila sleepily rubbed at her eyes, sitting up in bed and slipping her fingers through her hair with a yawn. Lauren wasn't in bed with her, but she was still in the apartment. For a moment Camila thought Lauren had gone out to work, but she remembered that Lauren was 'let go' from Mick's after a 'disagreement' with her boss, and was looking for a new job.
Faintly, she could hear Lauren singing, a little louder than the music, and way off-key. Camila laughed to herself and hauled her stiff body out of bed, stretching her arms above her head and twisting her back, working out the stiffness of her joints and muscles. She opened the closet door and dug through the clothes hanging, coming back with a sweater and pulling it over her head.
She wandered out of the room and into the kitchen where Lauren was, hovering over the stove, moving something around in a pan with a spatula. And then the smell hit Camila, and she moved over to where Lauren was, arms snaking around her waist as she rested her head onto her shoulder. Lauren jumped slightly, and she stopped singing, the music more clear without Lauren's voice rising above it.
"Did I wake you up?" Lauren said as she pulled the bacon out of the pan and set it onto the waiting plate beside the stove, turning the burner off and turning around in Camila's arms.
Camila hummed softly and shook her head, pressing her face into the crook of Lauren's neck. Lauren laughed softly and brought her arms up, holding Camila against her chest.
"You've got a big day today," Camila mumbled against Lauren's neck, lips brushing against her skin.
"You washed those clothes last night, right?"
"Yeah, I put them in the closet," Camila laughed softly, pulling back to look up at Lauren. "Now, what's for breakfast?"
They ate at the table, Lauren sitting across from Camila , shoveling scrambled eggs into her mouth, and Camila looked on with a fond smile on her face. It had been almost a year since she had moved in with Lauren, and they had fallen into a routine with each other so easily. When Camila had classes, she woke up before Lauren, showered and got ready, and kissed her before she headed out. On her days off, Lauren woke up before Camila , letting her sleep in, and Lauren normally cooked breakfast for the two of them.
And when Lauren worked, Camila would stay up to wait for her to get home, busying herself with her homework or studying, and when Lauren would get home, they'd have dinner together with a record playing in the background. It was a good routine. It worked.
Camila stretched her leg forward, the top of her foot grazing over Lauren's leg, and Lauren looked up at her, grinning.
"You're gonna do great today," Camila smiled as she picked up a piece of bacon to chew on.
"Thanks, babe," Lauren laughed softly, finishing off her scrambled eggs. "But I'm great at everything I do, aren't I?"
"Don't be so smug."
She finished off her bacon and pushed her plate towards Lauren, not too fond of eggs herself. Lauren gave her a questioning look, but Camila shrugged.
"Don't like my cooking?"
Lauren pulled the plate toward herself and began to eat the eggs, and Camila rolled her eyes, pushing away from the table and moving to the other side. She leaned over Lauren and wrapped her arms around her neck, sleeves hanging over her hands past her fingers, and she pressed a kiss to Lauren's cheek.
