Chapter 5- Mason's Chapter

Time Changes Everything, Don’t You Know That Mason

“Please don’t tell him.” Catlin begged again, grabbing her school blazer, which was tossed to the side, while rearranging her shirt’s collar. Mason didn’t know what to say other than ‘shit’. Out of all the words in his vocabulary he could not find a better word to sum up this situation. “Please don’t tell anyone,” Catlin blurted out, almost starting to sob. Mason knew he couldn’t pull that pathetic weeping style to persuade Mike to stay quiet. So when Mike finally made eye contact with him, Mason just declared a stare off. No movement just a showdown between the two, not to be the first one to budge.

Eventually Catlin realized what the two were doing and interrupted by asking.

“Are you going to tell, Mike” silent tension filled the atmosphere, as the only thing that broke the stillness was the school’s bell but the three of them just stood their ground, nobody moved.

“Well?” Mason asked.

“I won’t tell anyone.” Mike finally answered, “It is not my secret to tell.” Relief overcame Mason since if Nate or anyone found out about him and Catlin he would be dead for sure. “Anyway I should go,” he awkwardly waved and walked back to the school’s building.

“Oh my gosh!” Catlin gasped when she knew Mike was gone, “What are we supposed to do?” she asked Mason, looking flustered and overwhelmed, with bright red checks.

“So you think he is going to tell then.”

“Yeah don’t you?” she asked. Mason adjusted his messy hair and looked into Catlin’s eyes.

“No I don’t think he going to tell. He said he wouldn’t.” he responded.

“Of course he would say that anyone would of said that just to get out of that tension.” She threw her arms up in frustration. “Damn Mason, your supposed to be the brains remember.”

“So are you saying this is all my fault?”

“No, no, no that is not what I said.” She whined.

“Good, because if anything you’re in more hot water than I am, he is your boyfriend, remember.” Mason snapped. Tears began to roll off Catlin face.

“It is just so much easier for you to blame me isn’t it?” she cried out then curled up in a bowl leaning against the wall weeping.

“Catlin, I’m sorry,” he apologized crouching to her side, “I didn’t mean to say that.”

“Then what did you mean to say then?” she spat back at him.

“That it is both our fault but you are the only person who can make this right.” He consoled.

“That hardly seems fair.” Catlin complained.

“This whole situation isn’t fair Catlin. I am sick of being the backup secret second boyfriend to you.” That was when Catlin finally stood up and wrapped her arms around his waist.

“I know,” she whispered into his chest. “I’m sorry.” He could feel her heart thumping loud on his chest.

“I don’t know if that is enough for me anymore.” Mason pushed away and turned his back on her.
