Chapter 1- Mason's Chapter

Strangers In Public

“Mason, Mason get up now,” Veronica yelled from the upstairs hallway. “Your brother is here for a visit with Chelsea. Come down” she called again.

“Great” he said sarcastically to himself. “Be down in a minute,” he yelled to his mother. Mason looked at the time 9:23am the digital clock glowed on his bedside table. Slowly dragged himself out from his king size double bed and stumbled his way to his en suite bathroom.

Looking in the mirror revealing his tired worn down face. Messy wild hair, big brown eyes with giant bags under them and pale skin. Wondering why he can’t get to sleep last night. The last coffee he had was midday yesterday, no stress last minute homework he had to do for the first day on Monday. Yet last night Mason seemed to be consistently tosses and turning in his bed.

“Hurry up Mason!” Veronica yelled behind his door again.

“Just need a shower be down there as soon as I can” Mason yelled back and quickly turn on the tap to stop their conversation.

A few minutes later Mason emerged from his bedroom walking downstairs towards the kitchen looking less wore down and more presentable.

“Mason!” Veronica scolded, “Say hello to everyone” she snapped. Mason turned to face them and he saw Veronica, Dan and Chelsea Jobson seating in the lounge room around their wooden dining table.

“Hello mum, Dan and Chelsea” he said as polity as he could before walking towards the kitchen again.

“Where are you going?” Veronica asked while Dan and Chelsea started to whisper to each other.

“Nothing just getting some coffee” he replied do I need permission he wanted to add.

“Nonsense” she signed, “We are about to go out for breakfast you should come join us?” she asked.

“Sure” Mason smiled knowing this wasn’t a question but a command like most of requests were.

“Great” Mason thought, “A morning full with Dan bragging about his many accomplishes after his internship at Skadden Law Firm over the summer.” It was the relationship between the brothers trying to think of an amazing achievement to win over their parent’s approval.

After the 10 minute or for Mason more like 5 hour drive down the road they finally got a table at the Daylight café. The café was fairly quiet when the four walked in, leading a 17 year old girl waiter to guard to the perfect outdoor table out the back of the shop.

“Here is you table” she spoke then gave all of them each a menu. “I’ll be back shortly” she said and walked off.

“So” Veronica began “How was you internship?” she asked as she looked through the menu.

“Excellent, perfect, amazing” he described “It interesting working in such a big law firm in New York, assisting them in real cases instead of doing close cases for research. Truly a great experience” he went on.

Mason phase out not wanting to listen to his brother “amazing” stories of his “amazing” life. Looking around the café hoping to see a friend or someone to see. Then in the corner of his eye he saw Anthony Blake seating down just meters away from him, talking to a brown-headed girl Mason knew from school. Christina Harris apparently they have been dating since the start of the summer, according to Anthony’s Facebook profile. Mason quickly turn his head away from them hoping they didn’t notice him staring at them for a while.
