People at school started to notice that I’m hanging out with Helena now. I was used to getting a lot of attention, but this was different. It’s like I tamed a wild animal or something. We were at the cafeteria one day and a group of cheerleaders chatted on the next table. “Maybe he does her homework!”
“Hey!” I walked to their table. “I can ask Leila to tear you out of those cheerleader uniforms anytime I want. And you will be NOTHING in this school!” They almost cried when I said that. They gave me sour looks and went away. I went back to our table.
“You’re scarier than me. I just realized that now.” Helena picked on her sandwich and smiled. She looked prettier when she smiled. Her eyes glowed but not because of anger or hate.
“I think not!” I smiled back. “I’ll get us drinks.” I stood up and went to buy drinks. I was waiting in line when I saw Eric, the football team captain, talked to Helena. I paid the drinks and went back to our table. I sat down and asked, “What does Eric want?” She grabbed her drink and opened the can.
“He asked me to the Founder’s Ball.” I choked.
“Seriously?” She raised an eyebrow.
“Is that a problem, Taylor? Can’t guys ask me to the Ball?” I was ready to dodge her soda can in case she throws it at me.
“Eric’s a jerk, Helena. Why would you want to go with someone like him?”
“I didn’t say yes.” She answered quickly. I felt relieved for an unknown reason.
“Why?” I asked curiously. Maybe someone already asked her.
“Because-“ She stopped when she saw Leila walking towards us.
“So…”Leila started. “…you and me to the Ball. Yes?” She sat on our table and faced me, blocking Helena.
“Leila, the Ball’s a month away. There are other guys out there…” I was about to decline again.
“NO!” She shouted and almost all were looking at us now. “Why not accept, Taylor? Is it because of this freak?” She glanced at Helena behind her.
“Who’s the freak?!” Helena stood up. I stopped her from doing something, like smashing Leila’s face. Leila stood up as well and stared down at Helena.
“Hold up!” I broke the tension between them. I knew how short Helen’s patience was. I let out a big sigh and gathered courage. This would be the first time I would do this.
“Helena,” I looked her in the eyes. “will you go to the Founder’s Ball with me?” Dead silence. All eyes were on us now. Leila looked from me to Helena.
Helena met her eyes and said, “Yes, Taylor.”
