“I’m late!” I ran out of the house with a peanut butter sandwich in hand. I held my backpack with my other hand and swung it to my back. I took bites of the sandwich as I ran. Olympus High School was just five blocks from my home. But at this time, it felt far. I’m so dead! Ms. Banks, my English teacher, didn’t tolerate late students. “Senior year is the most important year in your life. It will make or break you. I suggest you start building yourselves and be prepared for the bigger challenges of college.” I remembered her saying that on our first day of class. The thought made me ran faster through the corridors.
I pushed open our classroom’s backdoor and everybody looked at me. “Sorry, Ms. Banks.” I couldn’t look at her. She might be angry now, with her eyebrow raised and that deathly look in her eyes. I remembered when one of our classmates, Eddie, was late. She almost threw an eraser at him.
“Good morning, Taylor.” I heard her say. I looked up, surprised. Her face was not angry at all. She’s smiling at me and she looked very pleasant. Is she sick?
“Please take your seat, Taylor.” I grabbed my seat near the back door immediately before she changed her mind. Everybody looked back in front. I noticed there’s someone with Ms. Banks and she looked familiar.
“Class, we have a new student here, the daughter of Elizabeth Adams!” That rang the bell. Elizabeth Adams was a famous actress. I remembered seeing her daughter a couple of years ago on TV when her mother won an Oscar award. Ms. Banks might be a fan of her mother, so she’s really in good mood. “Tell us something about yourself, honey.” Our teacher smiled at her.
“Hi.” The girl said in a very bored voice. She had her mother’s pretty face, other than that, no more. “I’m Helena. I’m not the friendly type of a person so…just back off a little.” Woah. I didn’t expect that from a famous, friendly and all smiles actresses’ daughter. She found a vacant seat at the back, the most corner seat by the window.
Ms. Banks started the class and I opened my book. Just like she said, we have to start building ourselves. I didn’t want to brag, but I’ll tell you these anyway. I’m a straight A student (that’s from my dad’s brain, I think), but I’m no geek! I’m also part of the school’s basketball team (the star player, they called me). The day ended and I was walking through the field where cheerleaders practice or sometimes kids play baseball. There were benches and swings for students to rest or study. A group of students were circled around something and most of them were cheering on. I came closer for a good look
I saw Billy, the school Bully, lying on the ground begging for help. Wait. Billy didn’t ask for help ever since, not even beg. The entire school’s afraid of him, including myself, because he’s the big bossy guy who could throw you in the trash can when he felt like it. He didn’t look like that now. Someone’s on top of him, with hands on his neck. I made my way through the crowd and was shocked to see Helena on top of Billy. “Don’t you dare touch me ever again, you understand?”
Children were cheering her and I heard one kid said, “Teach him a lesson, Miss!” All of a sudden, Helena was their heroine. All those kids bullied by Billy.
“Stop!” I grabbed Helena’s hand away from Billy’s neck. “Somebody call the guidance councilor!” I shouted to the cheering crowd. The noise died slowly and kids dispersed. Helena stood up and I helped Billy to his feet.
“Don’t you ever try to bully me again or I’ll make sure you’re one big crippled beef!” Billy was shaking. I’ve never seen him like this.
“Helena, please stop.” I said to her calmly. Billy apologized and ran away.
“And you. Don’t interrupt again.” She picked up her bag from the ground and walked away. That’s how her first day in Olympus High ended.
