I turned back to the guys in alarm and picked up my decorations bag, swinging it and smacking them simultaneously.

The second they stepped back, I grabbed Alex's slumped figure and dragged him to the back of the alley, setting him down.

Then I picked myself up and turned to face him.

He began to walk towards me but before he could try anything, the soft hum of sirens rang through the stale air.

"You called the cops?!" One of the guys asked in shock.

I nodded timidly, pushing the hair out of my face and standing protectively in front of my brother.

The guys grabbed their belongings and swept off before I could say cherry on top so I took my time tending to Alex.

Moment the officer showed up inside the alleyway, our belongings were a mess and my brother was whisked off into an ambulance while I sat in the front of the ambulance.

"Can you please explain what happened ma'am?" The smart lady officer asked me as I sat outside the room in the hospital, waiting for my parents to get there.

"Yeah sure..." I replied, not too eager to talk.

The decorations and the tiny Christmas tree sat in a lump at one corner of the hospital, slightly damp because of the light drizzle that occurred as we walked up the path to the hospital.

"We had gone out to buy a tree for the vacations and some decorations,' I began as the officer whipped out a notebook and took notes while nodding. "We were on our way back, walking through a small alley connected to our street. All of a sudden, these guys showed up who claimed to be friends of Alex's from his college." I said.

"Is Alex your brother?" She asked. I nodded.

"What's the name of his college, sweetie?" She asked me. " Xxx college."

"Oh, it's the one down the street, huh?" She said thoughtfully.

"When are your parents showing up? Have you given them a call?" She said to me.

"Yes they should be-" I was cut off when the doctor walked out of Alex's room holding a brown clipboard.

"Miss Caroun Lebbec?" He asked, glancing from left to right.

"Right here." I replied glumly, dreading the results of the quick check up.

"So here's what's happening," He started as he led me into the room that held my brother.

"No broken bones as far as I can see, only a couple of bruises across his arms which can be dealt with. Regarding the fact that he has been coughing some blood, it's not too serious. We have checked into the matter and it's nothing to be worried about. I recommend that he doesn't engage in too much activities for the next 2 weeks. Considering that it is Christmas break that is starting, it shouldn't be too hard to do.
Anyhow, we'll keep him here for the night to confirm something about the internal bleeding." The doctor summarised.

I sighed heavily as dad's car pulled into our lone parking spot.
Without a word to him, I picked up our stuff and rushed off into the house. Dad walked in a few minutes later and shut the door behind him, setting his keys on the counter.

"You stay here," he said gruffly. "Your mom and I will take care of things with your brother. I will call Mrs. Abbot from down the street to whip up something for you to eat. Don't leave the house." He instructed before stalking off to Alex's room to grab his stuff.

I sighed in relief as I heard dad leave the house and get into his car before driving off.

I huffed and grabbed a hair tie from my bedroom after changing into shorts and a tank top. I had a rough day and so did Alex of course, but he wasn't around to chill with me which was kinda sad, to be honest.
