“Watashi no tomodachi, Ayako-chan.” Kaito’s unhesitant answer made Irene widened her eyes. Everything inside her froze while in his embrace. She was speechless.
He’s… he’s… Irene started to stutter inside. She never expected this to happen before. But then, her head lowered down, sighing and her fake smile started to form.
“You’ve improved now,” Irene whispered. Kaito could just snicker at her answer, as if he really expected those words from her before.
“Nee nee Ayako-chan. You know we’re the same. Of course I could figure these out,” Kaito replied, still holding her in his embrace.
“Hm… you found me out. How?”
“Everything’s obvious, Ayako-chan. I know everything about you. You’re doing everything; it’s just you’re using a different name. Irene Akai, right?” Slowly, Kaito loosened his embrace, looking into Irene, who now revealed herself as Ayako Kiiroi that Kaito once thought he lost, forever. “I’m such a great person right? I found you. Even though I’m trying to say to myself that it was all too impossible. But I guess I’m totally right about you, Ayako.”
“But it took you a long time to notice me. My self-transformation had fooled you, right? Thanks to that professional in London,” Ayako admitted, pushing back her hoodie, revealing her messy black, hair bun.
“Ah yes… I almost got fooled by your blue contact lenses, and your blonde hair. Asami told me that she saw Irene last night, with black hair-”
“Yes I knew. I saw her too that time, and I’ve tried to avoid her from seeing my face. I guessed she knew that it was Irene because of the bag that I wore last night,” she easily responded, while patting her bag.
“But why are you coming back, under the shadow of Irene Akai?” Kaito suddenly asked. That question put Ayako in total silence. “You can just be yourself-”
“You… don’t have to… know, Kaito-kun. It’s a personal matter.” Kaito watched Ayako’s expression; he could see hatred was fuming in her. “Now, you found me. But Irene Akai will always appear in the class.”
“Naze ka?” Kaito asked, surprised with the fact.
“Don’t you ever forget, the fact that the whole class had a long time belief on my ‘Ayako-to-Irene heart transplant’ story,” Ayako elucidated, with a gratifying smile that even shocked Kaito. “Do you even think that it make sense when Ayako Kiiroi that they knew had died, has come back to life, because Irene give back the heart to her? I don’t think so, my dear Kaito…”
Kaito stared at her, still shocked. Well, that was true though, but… “Even so, you need to come to school too-”
“I’ll move to a new school,” Ayako coldly answered, as she turned to the bread shelf and started to pick another bun. Kaito was stunned; her words, the way she said it, it was so cold. “No one should know about my existence. Ayako Kiiroi had died a long time ago, since Irene Akai came into this world. Only my family would call me Ayako again, but other than them-” she stopped, turning to her unmoving friend. “Will still acknowledged me as Irene Akai; the blonde-haired girl from London. And that includes you, Kaito Shiroi.”
“You’ve changed-”
“That’s because I’m Irene Akai. I’m red, which symbolises hatred for me. That’s how the name was formed. The name, personalized my attitude. Just everything about me.” Kaito was speechless, hearing to her cold words. “I’ve changed, because the personality of Irene Akai is this, the one that you’re facing now. You should look for the cause of my change. He knew it all. He caused this. If he didn’t do ‘that’ to me, I’m still Ayako Kiiroi that you knew since your elementary year. I hate Ayako Kiiroi.” Ayako selected a plastic-wrapped chocolate bun from the shelf, and turned to her friend, with cold eyes. “Gomen ne, but I have to go home. Sayonara,” she frigidly said, before turning her back on him, and walked away, leaving him in his frozen state.
Ayako…completely has changed. There’s no way that I’d let this friendship between us ended because of this. If Naruto have the desire to stop Sasuke, I’ll have the desire to stop Ayako Kiiroi from leaving. ‘He’? Who did she refer to? And ‘sayonara’? That’s a forever goodbye.
With the peanut butter bun still in his hand, he ran towards the cashier and put down the bun and his drink, before running towards the outside. Unfortunately, he was a little bit late; Ayako was now nowhere to be seen. “Urgh! I should ask her who was ‘he’. Hm, daijoubu. I’ll come to her house, on my way home.”
