“What were you guys doing under that tree?” asked Atsui in the middle of our walk to the nearest takoyaki restaurant where Kaito should be going with Atsui. Both of us were blushing. I really didn’t know what was Kaito wanted to do to me.
“Nothing. We’ve absolutely did nothing,” Kaito answered, looking at me that walking next to him. “We were just having a chat, waiting for you.” Atsui nodded, as I’ve seen the restaurant already.
“Oh we’re almost there! Hayaku!” I said; just to make sure that this conversation goings to end immediately. Then Atsui’s next and last question during the walk really, really stunned me.
“I thought both of you were going to kiss? Both of you are couple right?” I felt like my tongue was poured with tons of ice cubes! “The whole school was talking about it right now.”
“No it’s not true at all. We’re like siblings,” said Kaito, and turned to me. “Right, Ayako?” Atsui was looking at me too.
“Yes, that’s true. We’re like siblings. Not more than that.” The moment I said that, I felt sad and miserable. Then Kaito put his right arm around my shoulders, and smiled to me as I looked up to him. I smiled, but with a sad eyes. Kaito was amazed at first, but then he smiled a delightful smile.
It’s okay, he said by moving his lips. Both of us smiled. A few minutes later, we’ve arrived In front of the takoyaki restaurant. As we entered the restaurant, I saw a guy from the same school as me waving at us. Atsui waved him back, and brought us to him.
“Hi Shito. These are my detectives’ friends that I always told you,” said Atsui, after she offered us to sit. Then I remembered that Shito was a senior student in Murasakino High School. After we introduced ourselves to Shito-san, Kaito and Atsui was about to leave me with Shito-san when I held tightly Kaito’s left hand wrist. I felt awkward if Kaito left me with a stranger that I didn’t know well. But Kaito gave me a smile, maybe the smile mean ‘it’s okay’. Then he left the restaurant with Atsui, leaving me with Shito.
“So, in which class are you?” I asked, just to keep any silent moment away. “What I know about you is just that you’re a senior student. Right?”
“I’m in class 3A,” he said, looking straight into my eyes. Now I felt so awkward. I can’t keep the silence away, because it came after Shito’s action. I looked at my hands on the table, thinking of a topic. But instead me, Shito started it. “So, how long already? Since when?”
I looked up at him, amazed. What ‘how long already’? ‘Since when?’ What is he asking? Then I realized what he was asking. “No, me and Kaito never date each other, which mean we’re not couple.” I said, smiling to him, which then he replied that smile.
“Is it? Can I believe you? Both of you were like a lovely couple,” Shito said, getting closer to the table which separated me with him. “So, if it’s true, can I ‘apply’?” I was like, what?! ‘Apply’? What does he meant by that?
Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice. “Otanjoubi omedetou Ayako-chan!” I turned back, and saw Kaito was bringing a large chocolate cake to me with Atsui next to him, holding a medium-size wrapped box. Then now I remembered. It’s my birthday today! How came Kaito could remember my birthday when I’m not? Then Kaito put the cake on the table, and sat next to me. Atsui sat next to Shito-san and gave me the box she held.
“Arigatou Atsui-san!” I said and bowed to her. After I cut the cake and gave a slice to each of them, there was still a large portion of the cake. “Umm… guys? Who’s going to finish the cake if it’s not finish?”
“Don’t worry. I’ve invited more friends from Tokyo and some from here,” Atsui said, pointing her finger over my head. I felt weird when she points her finger over my head. Then I turned around, and surprised! It’s Moshi Kuroku, another famous high school detective in Tokyo.
