I woke from relaxing slumber. It was summer! I jumped up quickly, grabbed my riding pants and boots and put them on. Racing to the kitchen, I grabbed a few pieces of bacon and headed outside. As I approached the door I grabbed the golf cart keys. I shoved the keys in the ignition excitedly and drove off towards the barn; where my horse awaited my presence. As I parked the cart and hopped out, I ran inside the red mess of a barn.
I smiled happily at the sight of the beautiful mare; Blaze. Blaze was a chestnut beauty with soft brown eyes and, of course, a white blaze on her head. I led and tied her to the post just outside the barn where I always gave her a bath. But only after I ride would I give her a bath. I would grab that old leather english saddle and bridle. Hosting the saddle on Blaze's soft back and then shoving the bridle into her mouth. Today I was bound to meet Claire, one of my friends and horse riding buddies. Claire's horse's name was Cinder, a gray thoroughbred and he was a beautiful gelding (boy horse). I mounted Blaze and warmed her up, round and round in my favorite clover patch I liked to lay in and watch the clouds. I stopped her to the sound of a strong-sounding horse's whinny. Claire! "Claire, it's you how are yo-" I called, immediately after I clapped my hand over my mouth. Colby Adamer. "Well if it isn't April Hills," Colby nodded at me slyly. "And Ad-Adamer what are you doing here?" I asked wonderingly. I hated the way he used my middle name, Hills.
Typically the land didn't belong to anyone. It was barely on Colby's property but his parents never used it. And neither did he, until today. The field was through some trees to get here from my house. But it's the only place to ride and hang out. "Was gonna ask the same thing. I'll make you a deal, you can keep riding on this land if you beat me in a race," Colby spat out. A race. A race. Blaze was a spunky quarter horse while Dime was a huge Arabian. "Ok, start at that gate and jump the log then to those trees," I said, surprised they were my own words. What am I thinking? We lined up. "Ready? Go!" Colby yells and gets a head start. "Come on Blaze!" I yell at my horse and push her into a gallop. Colby and his gelding were far in the lead. But of course he and his Arabian were in the lead. I squeezed my thighs to ask Blaze for more. Blaze jolted forward but it was not enough. Here came the log. The jump. "Easy Blaze. Come on!" I whispered in her ear. I stood up in my saddle and leaned forward. We cleared it, and so did Colby. But the jump made Blaze lunge forward and we were head to head with Colby. That's when it happened. Dime, Colby's horse, lunged his head to Blaze's shoulder. Dime's teeth scraped along Blaze's shoulder.
Blaze let out a shrill whinny. I peeked down at her shoulder. Blood. That made me angry. Colby had a smirk on his face. I balled my fists and aimed, at his face. I hit him square on the face. My knuckles had warm liquid on them I looked at them. Blood. I looked back at Colby. But he wasn't on Dime, he was on the ground. I kicked Blaze into a flat out run. We had won, but Blaze had to go to the vet. And I had to apologize to Colby.
