I heard footsteps drawing nearer and nearer. I heard my breath but was so nervous. Then he stoped walking. The ruffling of leaves was above me. He is on the bank of the empty creek, right above my head. I waited for a blow, a punch, anything. Then, without any warning, a heavy weight crushed my sides. I kicked, catching the attacker in the gut. Colby. He stumbled back, winded. After he caught his breath, he punched me in the shoulder. I lunged for his throat but twisted and punched him in the stomach. "Brat!" Colby called. I ran for Blaze, terrified. I'm pretty sure Colby wanted me dead. I jumped on Blaze and kicked her into a run. Colby and his horse were on our tail. We ran past my house but I kicked Blaze to keep going. I had a trick up my sleeve, something Colby could never do... I looped around the house two times, just to confuse him. Then I headed backwards the way we came, the way to the creek. I slowed Blaze to a trot and looked around. Colby was just now leaving the house, confused. He stoped his horse and looked around. I kicked Blaze on into the creek. She hesitated but followed my command. Once in the creek, I guided her with the reins to the place where the creek opened into a small pool. The pool of water looked deep but I knew it was only up to my ankles. I kicked Blaze and she splashed through the water as it touched her hooves. I heard hooves hitting earth as we reached the end of the water. Turning around I spotted Colby on his fancy warmblood.
I turned Blaze around the way we came to see Colby at the other end of the pool. He sneered at me, "April! You are in for a treat..." He kicked his hours towards the water. I spun Blaze around and kicked her on. She sped on, her feet barely touching the ground. We were flying. The only problem was, the creek was coming to a turn. We had two choices, turn with the creek and risk Colby catching up, or... I couldn't risk it... We had to jump out of the creek. Blaze and I have never jumped anything but an occasional log or fallen tree. "I trust you," I whispered. Blaze shook her mane as if she understood. The turn was coming. I leaned forward and kicked her into the jump. Blaze didn't hesitate one moment, and cleared it clumsily. I slowed her to a halt and turned to see Colby stop before the turn.
" You win this time, Yommers." Colby kicked his fancy warmblood back the way we came. I sighed silently to myself. Thank goodness.
