I walked into the kitchen where mom was making her morning coffee. She glanced at me and then grabbed her finished warm steaming cup. "Good morning," she said sharply. I nodded a greeting and mom just rolled her eyes. "I have something for you to do this week." I sat down at the kitchen table with mom. "You will go every day this week to the Osage Hospital to volunteer there," mother said, raising her voice.
My mouth gaped open and mom's words hung in the warm summer air. I shook my head roughly. "You're going wether you like it or not," mother pretty much yelled. I wasn't going to get dragged into this mess. Mother nodded to the door. I had lost the battle. I slid on my boots and pushed the back door open. The sunrise was beautiful and it wasn't too hot.~........~
I rode Blaze down the long driveway. "Hey, April!" The voice belonged to Gabby. "Good morning," I tried to sound polite. "Where is your mom?" Gabby asked, glancing behind Blaze. Gabby was wearing a blue and pink tie die shirt and jean shorts. "She's doing stuff at the house," I said. "Where are you going?" Gabby asked. I took a deep breath and decided to tell Gabby the truth, there was no sense in lying.
"I'm volunteering at Osage Hospital," I replied, feeling irritated. Gabby hesitated. "Well good luck."

I was surprised to see another girl volunteering at the hospital. "What are you doing here?" She asked. I shrugged my shoulders. "What do you think? I'm in the volunteer room," I snapped. I noticed it was someone from school but I never knew her name. "Well you're early," she snapped back. Weird. I remember this girl always being quite in school. "You must be April" she replied, sighing. I nodded. "Well, I'm Josie," she said."Are you ready to get to work?" Josie said loudly. I looked at her for a second then nodded. Suddenly a dog jumped on me out of no where. "That's Ellie," Josie said proudly. The German shepherd puppy licked me in the face. I scratched her on the ears. "So this is your dog?" I asked. Ellie panted happily. "Yup," Josie replied. "You get to walk her around to patents who want to pet her. I nodded happily. This might not be that bad. "So what are you going to do?" I asked Josie. Josie looked at me. "I'm going to sing and dance for the kids, they really like it." This might not be as bad as I thought.
