Morning light cascaded into my bedroom through my pink curtains. I jumped out of bed, put a white t-shirt on, and slipped on my jeans. Grabbing my hair brush, I tiptoed down the stairs and into my mom's room. Sound asleep. I combed my hair and took a muffin from the counter. Heading outside, I slipped on my boots and ran to the barn. By my surprise, someone was waiting in the shadows of the tack room door. All I could tell was it was a boy and he was my height. "Hey, this is private property. What do you think you are doing?" I blurted out at him. He stepped into the musky light of dawn. Colby. He smiled a smirky smile. "Technically, you were on my property. Private property," he sneered back. I didn't want anything to do with this. "Ok, I get it. I just want to ride Blaze. So if you could move I could get her saddle," I kept an expressionless look on my face. He shrugged and stayed where he was. "Excuse me!" I was losing my patience. He didn't budge. At this I got mad and shouldered past him. He stood his ground and pushed me to the ground. I landed hard on my elbow. I looked down to see blood smeared on my arm. I didn't want to fight. Not from all the trouble I got in last time. I could not hold it in. I tried to hold back but I could not bare it. I rose to my feet and shoved him to the side. I had a clear path to the tack room now. I ducked under Colby's fist that was aimed at my head. I grabbed a halter and pushed my way out of the room.
I sprinted to Blaze's stall and went inside. Shoving her halter on her, I led her out. Colby was behind me, I could tell he was going to throw a punch. Before he could do anything, I jumped on Blaze and kicked her into a trot. Colby was off our trail but he was headed to his house at a sprint. I knew he was going to get his horse and come looking for us. I went through the woods and down to the creek. I hopped off Blaze and tied her to a tree. Jumping into the creek, I sprinted a ways. It was a muddy day so I covered my tracks with autumn leaves. I ducked under branches and crossed over roots. Finally, I found a dip in the creek. In the dip was muddy water. I carefully went around it, trying not to fall in. Then I crouched under same brambles and over grown roots. I sat, lying in wait. I listened for the sound of Colby Adamer, my worst nightmare.
