It was a boring day in Columbus, Ohio. The sun was out, burning people with its scorching rays while the birds chirped endlessly. Meanwhile, Joshua Dun stood behind a metal stand with an assortment of colored balloons tied to it.
Since Josh's drumming career hadn't gotten him a gig yet, he worked part-time at his aunt's balloon stand, helping her sell after she's tired of standing.
The itchy bright blue apron hung around his neck, over his black muscle shirt, and tied around his waist. He adjusted the red baseball cap he wore into a backwards position to push his hair out of his face. It was very hot outside, especially in all black.
Josh's summer wasn't supposed to be filled with selling rainbow balloons for 4 hours every day each week. Instead, he wanted to hang out with his totally ̶v̶e̶r̶y̶ ̶m̶u̶c̶h̶ not broken up band, Forty Five Conductors.
Although music was his passion, it seemed his band members were losing interest and actually wanted to be functioning members of society.
Losers.
I guess you could say 42 Conductors was broken up. It's not like they landed any gigs anyway. They were basically racket since the only people who knew how to play an instrument was Josh himself and his childhood friend Matt.
Josh grumbled a, "Have a good day," under his breath as a mother walked away with a pink balloon, handing it to her daughter. That's how the boring ballon selling days usually were.
But then he showed up.
Tyler Robert Joseph.
Josh's crush. It's been a longtime since the bisexual male had fallen in love a first sight, especially with a male like Tyler. He could remember the day perfectly, like it happened 3 days ago.
Because it did happen three days ago.
Flashback to March 19th, 2017. Josh was working the usual four hour shift, selling balloons to kids and random teens that happened to stroll by. He finished selling a red balloon to a teenaged girl with the most neon pink hair he'd ever seen. He might dye his hair that color one day.
Josh stared through the heatwaves into the horizon, waiting for his shift to be over. "30 more minutes, Josh," he reassured himself. "Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, pumpkin pie, motherfucker."
"Um, excuse me," a squeaky voice stuttered, "can I please buy a balloon?"
Josh snapped out of his trance and stared straight into the chocolate eyes of the most beautiful male he's ever seen (besides Ryan Reynolds. Ryan is hot).
Josh was awestruck. The timid teen had the cutest look to his puppy-like face. He also seemed to have tattoos, so he must've been 18, which was Josh's age.
"Uh, yeah," Josh stuttered out in a quick sentence. "What color?"
"Red, please."
Josh unhooked the balloon and handed the boy holding a Yogurt Journey cup the balloon. "That's $2.80, please."
The teen rummaged through his wallet. Meanwhile, Josh took this moment to take in more features of the boy in front of him. He probably had a girlfriend, but maybe not.
Tyler handed Josh the money and followed after with, "Keep the change." He walked away with the money, smiling.
Josh counted the money, a little sad when he realized he'd probably never see the kid again. A spark of hope lit up in his chest when he found a small slip of paper with digits on it.
He got the guy's number somehow.
Deciding to wait after his shift to text him, Josh finished the day.
Timeskip
Josh got to his house and instantly went to his room. He was excited to text the mystery boy. Yeah, he liked him because he looked good, but he picked up a few tidbits of the guy's personality. He seemed pretty shy and antisocial. The way he tapped his fingers in anxiousness probably meant he had anxiety, while the bags under his eyes indicated insomnia.
He created a contact for the guy and named him, "Smol Bean."
8:23pm
Josh to: Smol Bean-
Hey, it's the guy from the balloon stand. You gave me your number :38:39pm
Smol Bean-
Hey, Balloon Boy, lolThat night, Josh learned that Smol Bean's name was Tyler but decided to keep Smol Bean as his contact. It suited him. Josh learned Tyler was into music and could play multiple instruments. He was impressed.
They joked around about forming a band named Sixty Two Balloons, which was the number of balloons Josh had sold that day.
In fact, the joke became real and in one night they'd created a two person band.
Back to present day, 3 days after meeting Tyler.
Josh smiled as his shift, his final shift, was over. Ever since the band was made, the two boys had been writing and practicing music. They'd already scored a gig from their song Oh Ms. Believer.
Many months after that day, they'd finally become a somewhat well-known band in their community. They had earned a smol profit ($50 per gig) and bought Josh a new drum set.
All was good. They also started dating down the line to fame.
Now, they're known worldwide as Sixty Twø Balløøns.
The end.
