"What the hell happened?" my mom yelled as she pushed open the broken door. "who the hell is he?" my mom looked at me bewildered by a tired Carter, who was bed ragged and bare. He stood silently in pants and t-shirt.
"Mom.." I protested, but didn't know how to explain. It's not what it looks like, but I knew those words were faulty.
"We didn't have sex." Carter blurted, making us both look to him.
Brilliant!
"He slept on the couch, mom, I wouldn't do anything wrong. The door.... it was broken because I lost my key and we kicked it in." I excused pathetically, shifting to an even more uncomfortable position than before.
"How about a window, Elizabeth? Where am I supposed to get another door?" she cried out, waving her hands up. Shaking her head, she walked away to the door.
"Hey, my dad is an architect! He has a few connections, im sure we could find you one for free." Carter confessed, throwing on his blazer while whipping out his cell. He sauntered away clicking the screen, pressing the phone to his ear.
"Yeah, dad? I need a favor...." he said slowly, I couldn't hear him, but focused on other things in my house. Sighing as he returned, I expected bad news from him.
"Can't get a door?" I asked.
"Worse." he met my eyes.
"What could be worse?" I laughed dryly, lifting my eyebrow questioningly.
"He wants to meet you." Carter diverted his eyes away.

My mother dressed quickly, trying her best to look fabulous to meet Carter's father and mother. Carter seemed more than a little sad about the encounter about to take place, but drove us over in his car. We approached a gate with a small neighborhood behind it. Carter smiled at the guard, who obviously has seen him many times before because he waved our car through the gates before shutting them behind us. My mom started to get uncomfortable now too, shifting as she looked out the window, this wasn't like her. I ignored her fidgeting and spoke to break the never ending silence.
"I thought your father was away?" I asked him, he looked into the rear view mirror at me, eyes crinkling in a smile.
"He came back two days ago, but he's not staying for long either, leaving in four days." he finished, looking back down at the road.
"That's sad, how do you manage your house?" my mom interjected, looking over at Carter in the driver's seat.
"I'm not even there most of the time." he noted, pulling into a long driveway. It wrapped around a garden that completed a half circle. He parked easily, stepping out of the car and motioning for us to do the same. We all stopped at the door, waiting for him to open the door. He fumbled for his keys, muttering an apology but eventually unlocking the entry to the house. It was grand, large enough to stand an elephant, maybe two or even three. A staircase wrapped the side and many skylights lit up the room.
"Hi!" A voice boomed to the side making me and my mother jump. A tall, thin woman, walked in to the room with open arms.
"Hey mom." Carter joined, smiling lightly at his mom, he turned red too. Sticking his hands in his pockets he called for his dad.
"Hi darling," his mom swallowed me into a hug, "how are you? I know my son does crazy crap but this is the most!" she shook her finger at him jokingly. "Here, you and your mother follow me, I'll get something to eat for you." We all stopped when we heard a clap from behind.
"They haven't been here for less than a minute and your stealing them away." a deep male voice replied. My mother didn't turn but I did, meeting Carter's dad's blue eyes.
"Hi." I squeaked. Carter grinned at my nervousness, and walked to my side.
"Dad, I'll talk to you later. This is her mom." he gestured, my mom waved and smiled awkwardly. Carter's dad's eyes widened but were dismissed when the mom cleared her throat.
"Okay, lets talk business. Carter, walk your friend around. What's your name dear?" The mom asked.
"Elizabeth." I replied shortly.
Carter tugged me out if the room and up the large staircase. Leading me down a short hallway that led to his room. It was plain, a bed in the center with a dresser near it. A tv, closet, bathroom, and a few scattered controllers bottles and remote batteries. I walked to the side of the room beside the dresser to peer out the window. The view was amazing and trumped my dead lawn that was seen through my bedroom window at home. I stepped back, catching my reflection in his dresser mirror. My hair was slightly disheveled so I decided to put it up with my fingers. I almost choked on the air when I saw a picture stuck in a frame.
It was Carter and Illiana.
Kissing.
