PART TWO

"how was the party?" montgomery walked to the refrigerator door in his home kitchen and looked to his sister who sat at the dining table with a turkey sandwich sat in front of her.

monica stared down at her lunch, zoned out. she thought about the night before, how she got tony to take her home, after calling him in tears.

she was good friends with tony, she was glad he was there for her.

she didnt care that she left justin like that, she didnt care about their almost kiss. she just decided she wouldn't care anymore. she doesn't care anymore.

"hello.. monica?" montgomery sat down beside her at the dining table, an orange in his hand.

she picked at the crust of her bread and mumbled, "what."

"i asked about the party."

"well what about it?"

"howd it go?" montgomery finished peeling his orange and stuffed a slice of the fruit into his mouth.

"fine."

monica slid her sandwich over to her brother, her head falling onto the table. montgomery gladly took the turkey sandwich, his eyes shifting over to the girl at the head of the table. "whats up, mo?"

"life sucks."

~

the next day at school, monica lazily hopped from her brothers car, grabbing her backpack from the floor. she felt like shit.

why? because of jessica. because of justin. because of the feeling of heartbreak. sure, they werent ever together, but they were friends. justin was friends with monty, best friends. and that bond followed to monica, the two became friends fast.

but then she fell for her brother's best friend. but he didnt fall for her, he fell for jessica. jessica davis. the girl who's always been sour to monica, and she never knew why.

montgomery and his sister met up with his friends, bryce, zach and justin. monica watched her brother give them all high fives.

"sup, mo," bryce eyed her, "lookin' good today, babe."

monica was taken aback by his comment. "babe"? he never called her that. "thanks, bryce."

"how's your hangover, monty!" zach laughed at the boy standing next to monica, "heard you got some on saturday? she gave in, eh?"

montgomery laughed and monica slapped her brother in the stomach, "y'all are vulgar."

"yeah, i tapped that freshie."

the boys laughed, monica rolled her eyes. bryce looked the girl from head to toe, stopping on a spot near her collerbone.

"yo, monica, who's the lucky guy?" bryce bit his lip and rubbed his thumb over the spot. monica quickly pushed his hand away and covered her neck with her palm.

"what are you talking about?" monica asked, nervously, quickly looking to justin but turned her eyes back to bryce.

"someone's fuckin' your sister monty." bryce nodded to montgomery.

"it's not a hickey!" monica shouted.

"then what is it?"

"a scratch. i-i-" monica sighed and let her hand go from her neck, "i tried to fix my lipstick and stretched my neck with my nail."

suddenly the bell rang and monica quickly hurried off to her first class.

~

sniff, whimper, drip, drop.

monica sat in the girl's bathroom, thinking about her life in general.

the day was going by agonizingly slow, too slow for monica's liking.

she just wanted to go home and cry herself to sleep to "sign of the times" by harry styles.

she wiped under her eyes to get rid of the mascara and pulled out her phone.

sister

read 12:23 p.m.

monica put down her phone and started to cry again. it was true, when she was down, she got real down.
