PART SIX

after school on friday, monica drove home in her honda civic, the windows all down, ray bans on her hazel eyes and music turned all the way up.

"i got hustle though, ambition, flow inside my dna." kendrick flowed through her speakers, monica bopping her head to the beat of DNA.

soon when she rolled down her street she put up all her windows, turning down her radio, pushing her sunglasses to the top of her head.

she pulled up her driveway and turned her car off, opening the door and grabbed her backpack from the back seat.

she shut her doors and walked to her house, "fuck it's so hot out."

she walked inside, ignoring the silence that she's so used to by now. she threw her bag on the couch and adjusted her tanktop as she walked to the kitchen.

it was almost 3:30 which meant her brother and his friends would almost be arriving after practice.

she opened the fridge, putting her keys on the counter beside it and pulled out half a watermelon that her brother bought yesterday at the grocery store and a lemonade capri-sun.

she took out a knife and started to slice the pieces of watermelon into individuals.

once she was done, she put on a pair of shorts and walked out to her backyard, drink, plate of watermelon and phone in hand.

she sat in one of the beach chairs by her pool and set the objects on the table beside it. she kicked off her flip-flops and sighed back into the chair, sliding her sunglasses onto her eyes.

monty
on my way, sis
read 3:40 p.m.

montgomery lead his friends out to his jeep and unlocked the doors.

his noisy friends threw their stuff in the back of his car and opened the door, monty getting into the driver's seat.

once zach shut his door, montgomery pulled out of liberty high, turning up the volume of the radio.

he held his head in his hand, driving with the other. he was stressed out.

"whats up, monty?" bryce asked from the back seat, slapping montgomerys shoulder. "monica still screwing around with that guy?"

"fuck off, bryce."

"what guy?" justin asked from the passenger's seat. montgomery shrugged.

bryce rolled his eyes and started up a conversation with an uncomfortable alex and zach.

montgomery pulled up to a stop sign and rubbed his hands over his face. he let the car go  before he stepped on the gas, driving straight.

"you okay, montgomery?" justin asked, eyebrows furrowing together.

"home stuff, you know the deal," monty sighed, turning right. "we just have no money right now. our parents are fuckers that don't give a shit about their kids."

"yeah, i get that."

"the state gives us barely any money, most nights its freezing and we have to share a bed. im surprised our house hasn't gone to the bank yet."

montgomery pulled up into the driveway, turning off his car.

everyone hopped out, bryce pulling out his bag of weed, the rest of the boys cheering as the dealer smirked.

the boys walked to the backyard, justin noting monicas car in the driveway.

as the group walked to the backyard, they saw monica, sprawled out on a beach chair, sipping her capri-sun.

bryce tip-toed over to her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, jingling the bag of green in her face, "hey honey."

"jesus christ, bryce, is that weed?"

"no its parsley," alex rolled his eyes and put his hands in his pockets.

"fuck off alex."

"hey, mo," monty grinned at her and grabbed a slice of watermelon from her plate.

"hey."

"oh fuck," justin ran a hand through his hair, continuing to type on his phone.

"foley?" zach sat on the ground beside monica's chair, rolling up a joint for them to all share.

"fuckin' jess."

"the hell does she want," monica pulled up her sunglasses, finishing her drink.

"she's on her way," justin groaned, shifting in his chair. "be cool, guys. okay?"

"sir, yes sir," bryce chuckled, passing the joint to alex who took a long drag.

soon enough, as the group finished their smoke sesh, not monica of course - what monty doesn't know wont hurt him - jessica came storming over to their circle, giving monica a glare before staring at justin.

"hey, jess," he started but she cut him off.

"you said you were hanging with the guys, not her."

"it's kinda hard to hang out with monty without hanging out with his twin, jess." alex muttered.

"you know what, justin," she moved to walk closer to him, "i knew i should have listened to courtney. i know all about you justin foley. and how monica practically pushed herself onto you and you let her."

monica scoffed.

"jess, that's not true-"

"forget it, justin. i'm done here." jessica flipped off monica as she left and monica gave her a friendly wave.

everyone was quiet as they heard jessica's car pull away from the de la cruz house.

monica was the first to break through the silence, biting down on a piece of watermelon.

"hey, at least id never leave you just as fast."
