"No, you don't understand, I already have my English credit, I took AP in high school. There is no way I still need to take an introductory writing course.""Listen, honey, something must have gone wrong with your AP credit or something. Either way, I have to go by the database and advise you to sign up for an English course immediately."
"Well, I can't take an English course, I'm already taking a full course load as it is. Can you call my high school counselor or something??"
The chubby advisor looked at Blair, a frown on her face. She was so sweet, Blair almost felt bad for being stern with her. Blair knew she was probably coming across as snobby or annoying but she couldn't help it, she did not want to sit in an entry level course learning information she already knew.
"That's not part of my job, sweetie. You can try and call yourself but I don't think it will make a difference. Classes start tomorrow and if you want to graduate on time I suggest signing up for an English course as soon as possible."
She handed Blair a printout of the classes she could choose from, and sent her on her way. Blair grabbed the paper and stood up, wanting nothing more than to call her hellish high school so something could be sorted. No way in hell she was going to push back her graduation date, especially not for an English course.
"Ms. Hendrix! I know this probably isn't any sort of consolation but I'd suggest Creative Writing 1214 with Professor Silver, a lot of students really like him. Maybe you'll enjoy the class."
Blair felt like crying, as she often did when something didn't go as planned. She was extremely organized and hated the fact that some things in her life she had virtually no control over. She walked back to her car and began driving to her apartment, calling her high school on the way.
"Hello, Kennedy High School, how may I help you?"
Blair was taken back to her high schools days. She spent most of her time in the library, eager to graduate and go off to college. How ironic that she was now hitting a roadblock in her college career all because of a high school course.
"Hi, I'm a former student and there seems to be some issue with one of my AP credits. I wanted to know if I could speak to a counselor so I could get this whole problem fixed."
"I'll transfer you right now."
Blair knew she would be transferred to Mr. Schneed , the horribly awkward senior counselor who was notorious for being terrible at his job. When Blair had gone to ask about the college application process, he'd been absolutely no help, encouraging her to "google it". Needless to say, Blair did not like the guy.
"Hi, Mr. Schneed, this is Blair Hendrix, I graduated three years ago. My ID number was 877120, if you pull up my records you should see that in eleventh grade I took AP Writing, a college level course. Sometime along the way something has happened and my university is telling me that I need an English class to graduate but I already am taking five classes, one has a lab and I really can't be bothered to take another introductory English course."
"Okay, Ms. Hendrix, I need you to calm down. Breathe in and out my dear. Unfortunately, if your school isn't accepting the credit I can't do anything."
"Excuse me?? What do you mean you can't do anything? Can't you call my school and tell them that I don't need to take a freaking English class!"
"Ma'am, I'm not going to respond to your yelling. I can't do any thing, you need to contact your school to get this problem fixed. Have a good day."
Mr. Schneed hung up on Blair causing her to scream before taking a deep breath in an attempt to regain her composure. Blair pulled into her designated carport at her apartment complex, ready to punch someone in the face. She walked into the entrance of her building only to find that the elevator was out of order.
"Great....I get to walk up 10 flights of stairs too, just what I need right now."
When she finally made it into her apartment she was out of breathe and ran to the fridge for a water bottle. She grabbed her laptop and signed up for Creative Writing 1214. It was nearly full which meant Blair would be spending every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon with a packed room, full of 18 year olds who only legally could be counted as adults and a teacher whose name sounded like a piece of metal.
It was now the day before classes started and Blair was having dinner with her friends Macy and Jack. The three were out at their favorite Mexican place, eating nachos and drowning their sorrows in margaritas. Even though all three only had one year before graduation they knew the upcoming year would be difficult and frankly all of them were more than ready to be done with studying forever.
"Is it totally lame that I still pick out my outfit before the first day of school like I did in high school," Macy asked before licking some salt off the rim of her glass.
"As a guy who only owns like two pairs of pants, I'm going to go with yes, that is very lame. I mean, who are you trying to impress in your advanced math courses? Pretty sure no one in there is exactly your type, Macy."
Macy was on the road to being an engineer and despite her overtly girly fashion sense and her valley girl accent, she was insanely smart. Hang out with her long enough and she could make anyone feel like an idiot.
"I don't think it's lame, I mean you didn't pack four suitcases worth of clothes for nothing, right," Blair said while downing the last of her drink. She was starting to feel it in her head and she was glad that Jack had insisted they take an Uber so no one would have to drunkingly drive back to campus.
"So, are you excited for that wimpy English class," Macy asked, laughing at her friend. Macy loved making fun of Blair, especially when it came to coursework. Since Macy was a STEM major, she took some of the hardest classes offered at their university. Meanwhile, Blair and Jack were both business majors so their courses were never as difficult. They were hard and required studying but they weren't quantum physics, that's for sure.
"Hell no, I still can't believe I couldn't talk myself out of that stupid class. I mean, creative writing...I'm sure when I'm writing budget proposals at work, they'll appreciate my use of alliteration and similes."
Macy shrugged, "I hear the professor's hot, maybe you can hook up with him a few times and he'll give you an A." Blair rolled her eyes, unsure if her friend was kidding.
The idea of hooking up was not something Blair wanted to do. Even though she was a grown up for all intents and purposes (she had a part time job, had her own apartment, paid for her own gas when she had the money, tried her best not to beg her parents for money) she was still a virgin. A fact no one knew, not even her friends.
She'd met them freshman year and had spat out a lie about losing her virginity to a random guy back in 10th grade. She'd made some jokes about it lasting for two minutes and had brushed it off. Three years had passed and through hundreds of booze filled parties, Blair had managed to not let anyone into her pants. Even at parties when she'd go into a room with a boy she couldn't bare to have sex. She wanted to have sex, but not with someone she barely knew.
The three finished their food and rode into an uber back home. They all lived in the same building on campus and Macy and Jack were literal roommates but they made sure to always tell Blair that there was zero sexual tension between them. Blair didn't believe them for a second and she'd bet what little money she had that they'd secretly hooked up at some point.
"Have a good first day, love birds," Blair said waving to her friends. Macy flicked her off before blowing her a kiss.
"Blair! Don't forget what I told you," Macy yelled while awkwardly grabbing her own boobs.
"I'm not hooking up with my professor!" Blair yelled before closing her door.
I wouldn't even know what to do, Blair thought to herself.
Author's Note: CHAPTER 1 :)))) This chapter is boring but hey, you got to meet Blair, Macy, Jack, and the ever so helpful, Mr. Schneed! This chapter is kind of short but hopefully it was enjoyable??? Let me know what y'all think so far! Don't y'all hate when school schedules get messed up, I remember my own high school counselor being kind of sucky but she wasn't as bad as Mr. Schneed.
