It was easy for the two to be friends. In all the ways that they were different, they were alike.
Luke was on the quiet side - he's not really a people person - while Ashton was as friendly a person could be without being creepy. Their music tastes were a lot alike, but a few different artists thrown in the mix for each side.
They were yin and yang.
Darkness and light.
It became a routine of shy smiles and blush-filled stares until Maria would hit Ashton upside the head with his notebook mumbling something in Italian about the two. More often then not Luke would sneak a picture of Ashton between the breaks when they were sitting together in a booth drinking coffee and exchanging stories of home.
"You're telling me that you've never dated anyone?" Ashton looks at Luke with wide eyes and an incredulous look on his face.
Luke looks away self-consciously. "Uhm yeah I guess." There's Lukes' unspoken theres a reason why I'm the one taking pictures but he presses his pierced lips together and listens to Ashton ramble how it was "complete and utter bullshit".
Luke takes a sip of coffee. "You're experienced for a flower-child." Ashton turns his head to the side and his flowers tilt slightly.
"Is that bad?"
"No!" Luke smiles reassuringly, "I just didn't expect it. You're more badass then me."
Ashton scoffs. "Please. I would never get so many tattoos. And piercings? They look much better on other people." Like you Ashtons' brain adds on the end.
Luke laughs - actually it's more of a giggle but only Ashton knows that - and shakes his head slightly.
The twinkling of the bell signals the arrival of the infamous Harlow. Today she's clad in dark washed denim shorts, a light grey hoodie with smudges of paint and god knows what else on it, and her combat boots. Her messenger bag is hanging around her shoulder.
"Hi Ashy." She kisses him lightly on the head causing Ashton to blush.
"Hey Harlow. You good?" She plops down next to Luke.
"I could be better. I'm staying with my friend right now. 'M working at a Starbucks down the road which is good enough pay." She looks at Luke and smiles.
"Hello. I'm Harlow, Ashton's friend."
"I'm Luke. Ashton's other... Friend?" Luke looks at Ashton a hopeful smile on his face.
"Yeah, friend." Ashton and Luke smile softly at each other and Harlow looks between the two smirking.
"Mmm. Friends." She looks down under the table quickly.
"I like your legs Lucas. They're long. So you must be tall. Six foot at least am I right?" Harlow is kind of a (read: a big) rambler but this causes Luke to laugh quietly so Ashton is a-okay with that.
"Six foot at least, yeah."
Harlow sighs dramatically.
"If you weren't so gay I'd climb you both like a tree because damn you're both hot." She looks toward the ceiling. "But alas, all the cute boys are assholes or gay. How must I go on? I have no will." She stands at the end of her outburst. "I hate everyone, but I love everyone. Ya feel?" Luke and Ashton stare at the girl with striped hair because what the fuck goes on in her mind.
"Yeah. Sure." Ashton supplies. Harlow smiles gratefully.
"I drew a bird the other day. It was a pretty bird. I was at the park and I'm like eighty-three percent sure that it was out to get me, but I fed it the bread from my sandwich so he didn't attack me. Did you know that condoms only work eighty-five percent of the time? Good thing I'm demisexual. And no demisexual is not Demi Lovato sexual okay. I like have no desire for sex. It's weird though, because I talk about sex a lot. I'm so weird jesus fucking christ. Hey I like your tattoos. And your bracelets. Why do you wear so many? Wait don't answer that it's probably personal sorry. Ugh I'm rambling aren't I? Whoops my bad." Her hands are placed on her hips and her eyes are darting around the room with every word she speaks.
"Are you ADD or something?"
"Yeah probably." She answers Ashton and sits down next to a quiet Luke.
She examines his face. "You're really pretty." She looks at Ashton. "You're really pretty. Why the fuck am I always the ugly friend. I want a refund on my everything please."
"You are pretty." Luke says quietly.
"Yeah and a boy." She jokes looking giving the tattooed boy a side smile.
"No, I mean it. I've take pictures for over half of my life. I know someone or something pretty when I see it. And you're more than pretty. You're beautiful. You carry such a light and brightness around with you and you can't help smile and laugh around you. Anyone would be lucky to call you their friend. Anyone." Luke looks up from his hands and gives Harlow a smile. Her cheeks are glowing pink and she looks down smiling.
"Thanks but... Ah never mind." She takes a sharpie out of god knows where and writes her number on both of the boys hands.
"Call me, text me, do whatever. I stopped by before I had to head off. If you see any cute boys who are potentially straight, text me." She winks at both of them before turning and walking swiftly out the door.
"That was really nice. What you said about Harlow, I mean."
"Well it's true. I mean I've just met her, but she has a really nice vibe, you know?" Ashton agrees and the two fall back into a comfortable silence.
The ring of Luke's phone bring them back from where they were in their minds and Luke answers it quickly.
"Cal? You alright mate?" He can hear some shuffling and a cough.
"Yeah yeah I'm good. Just checking up on you. I feel like I never see you anymore." Luke cocks is head to the side even though the other lad can't see him.
"Calum we live together. I saw you this morning. You were eating cereal remember?"
"Oh... Right. Well we never hang out anymore. Let's have a pizza and movie night. Please? I'll pay!" Luke laughs at his friends and agrees.
"Wait, you didn't do anything did you?"
"Uh..."
"Fucking hell Calum. I'll be home soon. I'm with Ashton right now."
"Oops. Sorry. Love you Luke."
Luke sighs dramatically and rubs at his face. "Love you too, idiot." He hangs up before he hears Calums' protests and gives Ashton an apologetic look.
"I'm really really sorry. I think Calum broke something and I have to go clean it up." Luke stands and awkwardly scoots out from under the table.
Ashton smiles. "It's fine. I had a bo-" Ashton clears his throat and smiles, "Friend who was like that. Michael was always getting himself into trouble. I'll see you when I see you, yeah?" The hopeful look in the shorter lads eyes causes Luke to blush and nod quickly.
"Yeah definitely."+++
I'm really sorry for the delayed chapter. I'm really horrible at updating bc I get distracted rly easily.
Thank you all so much for 2K reads and all the notes and comments bc I though this story would be a complete flop.
Y'all got a little more with Harlow and her story which I love tbh but not as much as I love Lukes'.
Ooh whatdoya think Calum broke?
Thanks for all of the reads and your support :-) it means a lot.
