The Village of Charnswell passed by the windows of the Ford T. Town Car which was being driven through the village by Mr Maple with Mr Jack Brandon and his mother, Henrietta Brandon in the rear of the car. The heir to the Earl of Charleston and his mother had travelled the extensive distance from the city of Liverpool in the Lancashire County to the small village of Charnswell in the Hampshire County.
Jack Brandon stared out the car window while Mr Maple drove past the large grey stone building that was the Charnswell Anglican Church before the navy blue Ford T. Town Car drove through the gates of stone manor which sat across from the church. The Chauffeur brought the car to a hold, "Here we are, ma'am, Brandon House," Mr Maple said.
"For the better or for the worse," Mr Maple climbed out of the motor and he wondered around to open the door for Mrs Brandon and her son, Jack, "I still do not quite understand as to why I am not just able to refuse?" Jack asked.
Henrietta Brandon turned to face her son, "There is no mechanism which allows for you to such an act because in the end, my darling boy you will be an earl and you will inherit the Charnswell Estate however once you are in charge of the estate then it is your decision whether you throw or retain," Mrs Brandon said.
The two new arrivals to Charnswell Village stared into the direction of a man in a black suit stood in the gateway to Brandon House, "Can I help you?" Jack said.
"I am Mr Handley, the butler of Brandon House and your valet, Sir," Mr Handley said.
"Mr Handley, I am afraid..."
Mrs Brandon lightly placed her right hand upon the arm of her son, "Mr Handley, may I introduce ourselves, I am Mrs Brandon and this is my son, Mr Jack Brandon," Mrs Brandon said.
Mr Handley nodded his head slightly in acceptance to Mrs Brandon's introductions, "I shall give, Mr Maple a hand with the luggage," Mr Handley said.
"No, need as I can..."
Mrs Brandon moved her extended arm which was resting upon the arm of her son to spread her arm across the abdomen of her son, "Thank you, Mr Handley," Mrs Brandon said.
Mr Jonathan Handley nodded his head slightly before he moved off wondering passed Mrs Brandon and Jack Brandon to assist the Chauffeur Mr John Maple with the luggage of Mrs Brandon and her son. Jack Brandon lowered his head as a matter of sulking while he walked along the path beside his mother towards the front door of Brandon House, "I will not allow for them to change me," Jack said.
"Why shall they intend to?" Mrs Brandon asked.
"Mother, Lord Charleston has made the discovery that his heir is a middle class lawyer and the son of a middle glass doctor," Jack said.
"Upper middle class," Mrs Brandon corrected.
"Mother, Lord Charleston will intend to limit the damage of an improper heir by mustering me into someone similar to their kind," Jack said.
"Jack, you stated that when you met with Lord Charleston in London that you liked him," Mrs Brandon said as she entered the front door of Brandon House were Jack shrugged and sighed before he followed his mother into the residence.
William Brandon, Earl of Charleston and Julianna Brandon, Countess of Charleston wondered down the large grand staircase from the second floor gallery to the Great Hall with the Old English Sheepdog, Ares following behind the couple, "I simply do not quite understand alas to why we are rushing this into this matter," Lady Charleston said to her husband.
"My dear, Jack Brandon alas is my heir," Lord Charleston said.
Lord Charleston and Lady Charleston stopped at the landing before the Great Hall near the large marble statue were Lady Charleston turned and stared into the direction of her husband, "Lawson was your heir but he had never lived here," Lady Charleston said.
