The Three Charleston daughters had gathered in Lady Nora's Bedroom after having been dressed for dinner by Katherine. Lady Nora sat at her small white dressing table staring at her reflection in the mirror while Lady Evelyn stood to Lady Nora's left seated on the small armchair and Lady Sarah behind her upon the edge of Lady Nora's bed reading a book which rested in her lap, "Why are you so set against Cousin Jack?" Lady Evelyn asked.
"Aside from the obvious fact that he is trying to steal our inheritance," Lady Nora stated as she adjusted her necklace.
"Your inheritance because alas it makes no indifference to Evelyn and I we shall not inherit whatever happens," Lady Sarah said.
"Cousin Jack is not one of us," Lady Nora said.
"Cousin Thomas is studying for the bar and so is Vivian McDonald," Lady Evelyn said.
Lady Sarah closed the novel which she was reading and tossed it down onto the bed which was when she noticed a novel which was resting on the bed beside her which she picked up and opened the cover to find a letter which Lady Nora had received from A.T, "In America not sitting at a dirty little desk in Kirby and besides his father was a doctor," Lady Nora said.
"There is nothing wrong with being a Doctor because we alas all need doctors," Lady Evelyn said.
"We alas need Crossing sweepers and drayman but it does not mean that we should have to dine with them," Lady Nora said pulling on her black evening gloves.
The girls had not heard the door open but Lady Charleston caught what Lady Nora had spoken while she entered, "Who do we not have to dine with?" Lady Charleston asked moving into the room as her daughter looked at her.
"Nora does not care for Cousin Jack," Lady Sarah said.
"Evelyn, would you be a dear and fetch my black evening shoal and Callahan knows which one," Lady Evelyn rose from the armchair and exited the room, "Sarah can you go down and see if the Drawing Room is ready," Lady Sarah moved from the bed to exit the room which she closed the door behind her, "glad to catch you alone," Lady Charleston said.
"You have driven the others away," Lady Nora stated.
"Perhaps," Lady Charleston crossed the room to Lady Nora but she stopped to smell the flowers which were on the vanity table, "pretty but the point my dear is that I do not what you or any one of you to feel as if they have to dislike or resent Jack," Lady Charleston said.
"You dislike the idea of him," Lady Nora said.
Lady Charleston moved away from the vanity table to sit in the armchair which was near Lady Nora's Dressing table, "That alas was before but Jack is here now and I do not see a future in it for the way things are," Lady Charleston said.
"I cannot believe that a woman can be forced to give away her fortune to some distant cousin of her husbands especially in the twentieth century because it is ludicrous," Lady Nora said.
"It is not that simple because alas the money is no longer mine as it now forms as part of the estate," Lady Charleston explained.
"Alas so when a judge hears..."
"For once in your life would you please just listen!" Lady Nora for the first time turned into the direction of her mother with an expression of shock across her face because of her mother's gruffness outburst, "I believe that there is an answer which would ensure you a future and give you a position," Lady Charleston said.
"You cannot be serious?" Lady Nora asked.
"Just think about it," Lady Charleston said.
"I do not have to think about it because alas you want me to marry a man that can barely hold his knife like a gentlemen?" Lady Nora asked.
"You are exaggerating," Lady Charleston said.
Lady Nora turned into the direction of her dressing table mirror, "Mama, you are american and do not understand these things," Lady Charleston's jaw dropped open while she clenched her white silk gloved hands into fists, "have you mentioned this matter to Granny because I suspect that she would laugh," Lady Nora said.
Lady Charleston took a deep breath and exhaled before she looked into the direction of her daughter, "Why would she considering that it was her idea," Lady Charleston said which caused Lady Nora to suddenly turn away from the dressing table mirror and into the direction of her mother because she was surprised by what she had just heard and did not believe that her grandmother could suggest such an idea.
