"Come on Alby, pull yourself together," I say as I drive to work. It is my 7th day on the job, that was when they decided if you were fit for the job and I couldn't stop shaking. Especially on today. As I pulled into the parking lot, I saw ambulances pulling in already. I ran up to them and they told me what was going on. "There was a building collapse and this man fell from the roof while flying a kite. He has a collapsed lung and both legs are broken. He is very lucky to be alive," says the paramedic, rushing into the hospital. "Have Dr. James look at his legs and we need to intubate now!" I stuck the tube in his chest and then ran to the next patient. "She was in a car wreck when the building fell on top of her. She has a laceration to the inner thigh and depressed skull. I walk into the hospital and ask how my patient is doing. "He is doing fine, but he has had a fever since 9 a.m. but he didn't want to see anybody but you," said Bethany. She is the head nurse and helps me take care of Rols. He is one of my favorite patients. I walk down the hall and as I walk into the room I see his mom pulling out his IV and life support tubes. "WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING TO HIM," I scream as I run to stop her!
"CALL SECURITY!" I yell as I pull her away and plug in his tubes. The tubes could not be reinserted. I grabbed the crash cart and started at 50 joules. "HE IS FLAT LINING CHARGE 100. CLEAR!" It was too late. "12:54 A.M." I couldn't save him. I walked out of the room with tears in my eyes. That was when I saw the mother in the waiting room. I ran over to her and said," What were you thinking? He was getting bette- "HE DESERVED IT!" she screamed. She took a swing at me and hit me in the jaw. I slapped her until the police stopped me.
It was 8:30 A.M. and I had a hour until my shift ended. It had been a long and painful night and I was ready to go home. I had nothing to do, so I took a short nap until I was woken by the loud siren of ambulances pulling into the E.R. Bethany was rushing to the doors as I was being caught upon what happened. "A hijacked plane crashed into the twin towers and we have people coming in as we speak. First victim, 37 year old Sean Quinn." Wait, that is my brother," I say. "Don't worry Alby, he only has minor burns" I wait by his side as they roll the stretcher into the E.R. He was knocked unconscious because of the pain. They put him on antibiotics and treated the burn. Then, person after person are rushed here and soon enough the entire ER and all OR's are packed with patients. We had to start sending patients away that only had minor injuries. we were almost done when the final person is rushed in with a metal spike going in through the heart and another through the neck. 58 year old Dire Quinn. "Dad?"
