Hearts and Halos // Chapter One

// Johnny's Point Of View //

My eyes shot open quickly, a scream lodged in the back of my throat, I was scared. My body trembled as I sat up straight my hand gripping my T-shirt tightly and my breath was quick. It was so bright I could hardly keep my eyes open, I couldn't tell where I was. I looked around, my eyes darting in different directions trying to figure out where I was. No one was around me and it terrified me, I don't like being alone.

"H-hello," I called quietly, my voice shaking slightly. "W-where am I-i?"

"Your in heaven of course," a voice said from behind me.

I jumped up quickly and turned around, faced with a boy around my age. I tripped over my shoes and fell on my butt, scooting back away from him. He looked like a Soc, he looked so well cared for and it scared me more than I was scared. He reached his hand out and took a step closer to me. My breathing quickened and I scooted back more, trying to get away from him.

"Hey kid it's okay. . . I'm not going to hurt you," he said softly. "Your Johnny Cade right?"

"H-how do you know my name," I asked with a shaky voice.

"Well I know you because it's my job to watch over you," he said with a smile. "Your in heaven."

"I-i'm in heaven," I asked. "I-i-i'm dead?"

"Sadly you are. . .," he said sympathetically. "You were such a good kid with a heart of gold. . ."

"T-that means. . . Where is Ponyboy," I asked quickly, getting onto my feet.

"He's in the hospital by your bed. . .," he said. "he misses you so much Johnny. . ."

"H-he's okay though right," I asked hopefully, I wanted him to be okay.

"He's a bit banged up but he's alright. What happened to him?"

"T-there was a rumble. . . H-he got hurt!"

"Johnny he's alright," he reassured me.

"O-okay. . ."

". . . Well my name is Max and I'm your mentor while your up here. You will be assigned to a person in about a week, you don't get to choose."

"W-what!?" I threw my hands in the air quickly. "I do not care what anyone says but I will choose, I need to make sure he's okay!"

". . . I'll have a talk with the person who runs the place and see what he thinks off this. . . I really will try and fight for you to choose," he stated calmly.

"Johnny, I tried my best but he wouldn't budge on his statement. You will get your person shortly and you will be able to hear them in your head so don't freak out," he said.

(A/n: The person in his heads voice will be in italics so you know that it's that person)

"O-oh. . ."

"I am very sorry but do try your best to help this person. You will be sent to Earth in a few minutes and no one can see you. You are invisible down there but be careful, they can hear you. You must never leave this persons side."

"Yes Max I'll try my bes. . ."

"Good luck," he said turning on his heel and walking away.

I smiled lightly and nodded slightly, looking down a bit. I felt my body tingle and felt myself slip away and disappear, I must be going down to Earth. My eyes closed tightly at the feeling, it was really uncomfortable at first but it felt better after a minute. My feet touched the ground and I breathed in deeply, sighing at the feel of being kind of alive again. I opened my eyes and it was dark, like I was outside.

"I-i miss you so much. . . It's hard being down here without you, I miss my best friend. . .," a voice cried out quietly.

The voice sounded very familiar and I almost knew who it was in an instant. It was my best friend, I somehow managed to get my best friend! A smile broke out onto my face and I took a step forward and my vision got clearer. We were by a grave, mine to be specific, it hurt to know that I really was dead. He was sitting there next to it, wiping his eyes ever so often and sniffling. 

"I-i want you to come back Johnny. . . I-i'm alone now and I can't take it. . ."

I sat down next to him and smiled lightly, leaning against my tombstone. I leaned my head over to read what it said.

My head tilted in confusion at the last part. Was there a girl I didn't know that loved me or something? Must be because I dont remember having anyone love me while I was alive, either that or I was too stupid to notice. My head turned to him and my heart broke at how sad he was, he looked broken. I wanted so bad to tell him that I was okay but I wasn't allowed to talk to him, they were the rules.

"Johnny, what I wouldn't do to get you back. . ."

"What I wouldn't do to be able to talk to you," I mumbled.
