"Hi," she said hesitantly.

"Who's this?"

"Oh." Wait a minute, what? He couldn't have deleted her number and forgotten her already! "Um, it's Cindy."

There was a sigh from his end, "I know, sorry. Joking is my defence mechanism, although that was an astonishingly pathetic attempt." He pauses for a second and what he says next takes a sardonic tone, "Gosh, it seems I can't stop being pathetic around you."

She remained silent, not knowing what to say.

"Did I leave you at a loss of words again?" She could hear familiar traces of amusement and light humour come back into his voice.

She sighed in relief. "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

She groaned; she hated apologising.

"I'm sorry for being such a bitch to you yesterday. I should've rejected you in a politer manner."

He let out an incredulous laugh, "Why do I get the feeling that you don't apologise often?"

"Because I don't. I rarely need to."

The boy chuckled again, "Is that so?"

She grinned, he didn't seem angry or hurt anymore. "Yeah. I'm generally right, so it's always the other person apologising to me."

There was a short pause, "Why did you call me? What changed your mind? You weren't wrong yesterday. It is pathetic that I can't even face you."

Cindy bit her lip and carefully worded her reply, "I might not have been wrong, but I was too harsh. There you were, declaring your love for me, and I completely brushed you off."

"'Declaring my love' would be exaggerating it a bit."

She was just about to reply when she got another call.

"Hey, I got to go, Brian's calling."

"Yeah, su—"

The line went dead before he could finish.

He sighed.

AN: Sorry I took so much time with this update. This week was just super tiring, plus every time I sat down to write the chapter, whatever spilled from my fingers onto the keyboard was absolute shit. What I'm uploading is the third version lol.
