"You sure you don't want me to stay a few extra days?" Chris asked.
"God no! It's bad enough I have to stick around to take care of some stuff." Billie answered as she pinned her black birdcage veil into her hair.
The two were back in Savannah for her father's funeral. It had been over a week since she had received the tragic news. And while Chris tried his best to be accepting and supportive, it was a struggle to see Billie so torn up with grief that they both were walking on eggshells. She already felt guilty enough that she ruined their family vacation, even though he insisted that it was beyond her control. And it also bothered her that he left LA just as he was beginning production on his next film. But luckily the director allowed Chris to miss one day of shooting under the provision that he was back in time to start his scenes.
Though Billie was grateful, she was also worried that he was wearing himself thin by flying back and forth. But he didn't mind a little jetlag, because he knew that her emotional state was much more important than any movie. Plus, he hoped that she would join him in California after the fact. But Billie never gave him a clear answer. Even though, she liked staying at his place in the Hollywood Hills, she knew that she was better off being by herself with the cozy comforts of their place back east where she could mourn in peace without him hovering over her. Chris was taken aback by her choice to stay in Massachusetts, but he also respected her decision and he knew that she would visit him on the set eventually.
As Billie put on her lipstick, she felt her hands trembling. She was grappling with the grim reality of losing a parent, but now she overcome with an uncanny feeling where she wasn't necessarily sad or hurt. But she felt empty because there was so many things left unsaid between her and her father. She hated that her last words to him were filled with so much contempt, and she now had to live with the guilt of not being able to take it all back.
Chris saw that her brain noise was getting the best of her and he asked if there was anything he could do. But all she asked was for a moment alone to collect her thoughts. Before heading downstairs, he kissed the top of her head and told her to take all the time she needed. And once he was gone, Billie frowned at her reflection in the mirror and was disgusted with herself because she had to give a eulogy in less than an hour, and she couldn't think of one nice thing to say in her speech.
She was hoping to find the right words when she was surrounded by her father's pompous acquaintances at last night's wake, but they all shared the same sentiment and agreed that John Bryant was nothing more than an insensitive, narrow-minded, miserable excuse of a human being. And it was depressing that they only came by to confirm whether or not he was truly dead and to say good riddance. And even though it bugged her that they all spoke so harshly, she just couldn't bring herself to defend her father's honor.
Hell, even her stepmother Vivian and her mother Iris had put their personal feelings aside and bonded over how much they truly disliked their ex. And to make matters worse, Vivian drunkenly confessed that John died of a heart attack while sleeping with his 21 year old mistress.
