It was almost midnight when Chris arrived in Massachusetts with his brother Scott. After dealing with a four-hour delay and a turbulent flight, they were so mentally exhausted that they collapsed in their beds the moment they got to their childhood home. And sadly, Chris didn't even notice that Billie had reached out to him.
In fact she waited for him to return her call but alas she went to bed disappointed. She tried to call him the next morning, but when she got his voicemail yet again, she became fretful and she feared that he had truly isolated himself from the outside world. But before she attended an important meeting, she reached out to his mom in hopes of clearing up some confusion.
"This is a pleasant surprise. How are you Bumble Bee?" Lisa said cheerfully.
She was preparing a nice breakfast and the two made small talk before Billie asked if she had spoken to Chris.
"He got in late last night. And he's actually sleeping his old room right now." Lisa said.
Billie was relieved that he was with his loved ones and she knew that he was getting some much needed emotional support. Lisa offered to wake him but Billie refused because she knew how much he loved to sleep in. Then she politely asked her to relay the message that she called.
"I'm sure he'll be happy to hear from you. I know he really misses you."
"I really miss him too." Billie said pensively.
Lisa did her best to hide her delight, but she was thrilled that Billie finally had a change of heart. But she added an extra push and asked if Billie was willing to come back home for Chris's birthday. The whole family was arranging a surprise party, even though he was adamant about not celebrating this year. But she knew that if Billie showed up, then it would definitely put him in a better mind set.
Billie actually considered attending since she was already in New York for business. And she could easily take the train to Boston. But before she could give a definite answer, Lisa had to get off the phone because she heard Chris moving around upstairs. But she promised to call her later with more details. And Billie agreed to keep Chris in the dark for the time being. Lisa then quickly hung up the moment he came downstairs. And he noticed that she was a bit jumpy as she finished cooking.
"Who were you talkin' to?" He asked.
"No one dear." Lisa then served him a large platter of buttermilk pancakes and scrambled eggs. "Now sit down and eat up!"
She quickly changed the subject and asked about his flight. And Chris complained that it was a huge hassle and that he actually regretted leaving California. But Lisa knew that he was just being a sourpuss. And she said that it was great to have him home because she had been worried sick about him.
Chris said that he was fine and he quietly finished his breakfast. And oddly enough, he was actually content. There was always something about coming back home that centered him. And he was always able to gain some peace of mind. And he knew that being with his family was the best way to cope with his depression.
Afterwards he helped his mom with the dishes and then he decided to check his messages. But he discovered that his phone had died, and he forgot to pack his charger. He tried to borrow his brother's, but Scott refused because Chris had barged into his room without knocking.
"Bro! Just let me borrow it for a second."
"Eat a dick and get the hell out!" Scott groaned and then he threw his pillow towards the door.
Chris hated that Scott was being a brat but he knew it was because he was trying to sleep in late. Then he yelled downstairs and told his mom that Scott was being a whiny little bitch.
"Christopher, stop giving your brother a hard time!" Lisa yelled from the kitchen, "And Scottie get your ass outta that bed and come get some breakfast."
Scott cursed under his breath and he slowly crawled out of bed. Then he chucked his charger towards Chris's head and stomped down the hall for a quick shower. Chris thanked him and he quickly ran back to his room to plug in his phone. And he was stunned that he had two missed calls from Billie. He sat on the edge of the bed and braced himself as he listened to her voicemail.
"Hey, it's me," Billie said with a timid tone, "Wow I didn't think this would feel so weird but it's actually it's been a really weird day all around."
Chris felt butterflies in his stomach as she ineptly stumbled over her words. And when she said that she was willing to talk to him, Chris actually feared the worst. But that all changed when Billie confessed that she missed him. And he knew from the sound of her voice that she was serious about giving him another chance. After the message ended he tried to call her back. But unfortunately she had turned her phone off altogether because she was meeting with her publisher.
Chris spent the rest of the day playing with his nieces and nephews, and for the first time in weeks he felt like his old self. He was no longer dejected and discouraged. But he was hopeful that he could get his life back on track. And because his faith had been restored, he allowed Scott to make plans for his birthday weekend.
Plus he was pleasantly surprised when Billie sent him a text later that night. She revealed that she was actually in New York City for work. And after gaining some new perspective so to speak, she was ready to discuss the status of their relationship. But because she didn't know if they could go back to what they once were, she was vague about meeting face to face. Chris sensed her hesitation about moving forward. And he decided to clear the air by asking where exactly they stood.
Billie didn't give him a straight answer, but she told him that it would soon. But Chris was frustrated with her reluctance, and he asked in his own special way if they were getting back together. And he was elated when she answered that they were in her own unique way.
They both went to bed with a newfound sense of clarity and Billie promised they would speak again soon. The following morning Chris and Scott met up with some old friends for an outdoors adventure and they went ATV riding at Crow Hill Motor Sports in Baldwinsville.
Scott figured it was the perfect plan to keep Chris away while everyone else set up for the party. And after they were finished, they would stop by Chris's house in Concord to clean up before bringing him back to Sudbury for his surprise. And even though Lisa was uneasy about them doing something that was potentially dangerous, she figured it was the only way to get Chris out of the house. And as her boys left she an unnerving chill course through her body and she was anxious for most of the day.
Meanwhile, Billie had left the city early that morning and she took an early train ride into Boston. She hoped that she had time to swing by her place to retrieve Chris's present that was hidden in her shoe closet. She had bought him an expensive shaving kit and had ordered customized rings for the two of them during their last visit to Disney. And she knew that this was the perfect symbol for a new beginning and it would show him that she was truly committed to sharing their lives together.
Unfortunately by the time she arrived into town, she received a devastating phone call from Lisa, who was screaming and sobbing.
"I can't understand what you're saying." Billie said frantically as she waited for her Uber.
Then her heart nearly stopped when she learned that Chris had been in an accident and he was now being rushed to Heywood Hospital for emergency surgery.
