"I've only been here a week and it's the worst thing ever, Mom!"

"It's........not......that....bad."

"But I can't do anything!" Brendon frowned. "I can't even get out of bed! Or move my arms! Or do anything! I can't even push the nurse button!"

"It's.......o-okay..."

Brendon sniffled and rested his head on her shoulder.

She stroked his hair in silence.

"H-How are y-you feeling Mom?" He asked eventually.

"F-fine....."

"T-That's good."

She nodded.

"I l-love you."

"I.....love.......you....t-too honey."

Brendon smiled.

She smiled too before she coughed slightly. She tried to hide it.

Brendon moved his head in alarm.

She just mustered a smile.

"A-Are you o-okay?"

She nodded.

"Promise?"

She nodded again.

Brendon nodded hesitantly.

"H-how........are...you?"

"C-Cold."

She frowned slightly.

"T-They won't l-let me have another blanket."

"Why not?"

"They said it was something about nerve damage..." He mumbled. "And that I'm not actually cold but because my legs are broken they feel like they're cold so I can't have another blanket and that's not fair because I'm really cold!"

She didn't respond.

Brendon sniffled and tried to wipe his nose on his sleeve, with limited success.

Jackie just stood and watched.

"W-Why are you sad?" Brendon whispered.

"I-I'm....not......."

"You l-look sad."

"I-I'm not...."

Brendon just sniffled again.

Jackie launched into a coughing fit and fumbled for her handkerchief.

"M-Mom!" Brendon panicked.

She just shook her head and stepped out of the room.

Brendon tried to get up, only for his stupid broken legs to fail on him again. They wouldn't even move a tiny bit, no matter how much he tried.

Jackie had planned on going back in, but her coughing just got worse for ages.

"MOM!" Brendon screamed, desperately trying to find a way to get to her.

A doctor came in after hearing his screams.

"H-Help me g-get to Mom!" He cried, reaching for the door.

"She'll be back soon Brendon."

He sobbed. "I-I n-need to h-help her!"

"She's okay, don't stress."

He could still hear her coughing. He tried to get up, but failed once again.
