"I saw what you put on your post of rowan. you aren't exactly slick, ya know."
"thank you, corey, I know," kaylani replied, hearing a chuckle escape the boy's lips over the phone. she had paced around her room for some time now, trying to figure out who had seen it besides corey. corey, who lately she had trusted for everything. in fact, if she didn't have chandler, she would even consider him her closest guy friend. but that wasn't the point right now. right now, she had posted something very risky, and she was slightly terrified. she hadn't even mentioned to rowan that she liked her, let alone wanted to date her. what was she going to do?
"I can hear you overthinking. calm down, kay. I promise it'll be fine if she saw it. and if she didn't, it'll still be fine. rowan likes you. a lot. trust me on that one."
"you're so good to me, cor. such a good friend. i'm trusting you on this one."
"you're doing the right thing by trusting me. I-" a beep sounded through the speaker, making kaylani look at her phone. she sighed, chewing on her lip.
"hey, cor? it's chandler. can I call you back later?" she asked quietly, making him tilt his head, though she couldn't see that.
"of course. is everything okay?"
"I really hope so. bye, cor."
"bye, kayls."
kaylani took a deep breath before answering the phone, nerves hitting her hard. chandler never called her. ever. they had known each other for forever, and he only called her when it was serious. so before she could even form a coherent thought, she had tears in her eyes.
"chan? what happened?" she breathed, hearing him take a deep breath before replying to her.
"I bought you a plane ticket to come back home for a while," he murmured, making her heart stop.
"what happened, chandler?"
"um, it's... it's mom." his voice was soft, like that was the last thing he wanted her to hear. she furrowed her eyebrows, words coming out slow.
"mine or yours, chan?" after silence filled their call, she repeated the question. "chandler, I need to know. please tell me."
"it's mine. but you're basically her daughter, I couldn't not tell you."
"I love you so much, chandler, you know that?" her voice broke because his just had, and she couldn't help but wonder what had happened, even though she couldn't bring herself to ask him.
"I know, kay, I love you, too. now please come home. i'll text you the flight details. I just need to see you, and I think dad does too. grayson keeps asking why you aren't here."
"i'm in the middle of shooting, chan. I want to come home so bad, but I can't leave. unless... unless I get my scenes done before the flight. how serious is it?"
"it's... it's really serious. I don't want to say over the phone." his voice was so uneven that she didn't know what to say, didn't know what to do. this was too serious to say over the phone. she had to go.
"I need to talk to the producers, then. I love you, chan. bye."
"bye, kaykay, I love you too." she sighed and ended the call, wiping stray tears from her cheeks. her fingers found themselves typing in a familiar number, eyes blurring as she did.
"hello?" the voice was lilting and cheery, bringing a smile to kaylani's lips even as she found herself sinking to sit on her floor. "hello? kaylani? you there?"
"i-i'm here," she mumbled, words fading together as she spoke. rowan dropped everything in that moment, shushing sabrina and amir, who were filming with her.
"what happened, kay?" she asked quietly. kaylani shuddered, shaking her head though the other girl couldn't see.
"it's a long story. my- chandler's mom is hurt, and I really need someone with me today. can I come over?"
"of course, kaylani. of course. i'm at home with sabrina and amir."
"i'll be right over," she murmured, wiping her eyes, "but I have a plane to catch."
