Chapter 18: Crying Won't Help You Now

I couldn’t breathe; it was like my hypothalamus programmed my lungs to stop working. I was terrified. I haven’t been this terrified in a long time. I tugged Tate with me as I kept a strong grip on his upper arm. I felt the coldness of the metal being shoved in the lower part of my back as I tried to get my lungs to keep on breathing and staying calm.

I saw a black van come into view as the ones behind the both of Tate and I, blindfolded us, and shoved us in the back of the van. I hit the base of the car with a thump, groaning in the process, as my elbow landed my fall. “Take them to boss.” They slammed the back doors as they got into the front and soon, we were moving.

“Payton, are you alright?” Tate asked me in a hushed whisper.

I didn’t answer him right away, as I was trying to find my voice. My mouth opened and closed, as it quivered from the fear that was running through my veins. My heartbeat was quickening in pace, my forehead and the palms of my hands becoming sweating from nervousness. There was an empty pit I my stomach but it felt like it was churning. I wanted to throw up. I bit down on my tongue to keep from doing so.  “What’s happening, Tate? Who are those people? Are they the drunk people?”

“No, the drunk people who attacked you, we killed on spot. These are new rogues, I believe. I can’t see that well, because of the wolfsbane.” I took in a sharp inhalation of air, as I scooted closer towards him, feeling safe in his embrace. Tate couldn’t see, so now how is he going to survive this?! I was shaking with fear and my teeth were chattering because my nerves were on the high.

I felt him wrap his arms tighter around me, encaging me in them. It felt so wrong to be in the arms of another man except for Kaius, but I knew I was safe with Tate as well. Something was telling me to shove his arms off of me, but something was telling me that it was okay. Ugh, I don’t even know how to act around Tate anymore.  I leaned my head against his shoulder, trying to calm myself down, trying to rest my heart rate.

“They’re going to find us, right?” I asked softly, putting my hand over my face to keep from crying out.

“Yeah. They’re going to find us, don’t worry about it. There are cameras in every inch of the hospital, they’re going to see who took us. It’ll be alright, I promise.” I didn’t believe him. I didn’t think that we’d make it out of this alive, but somehow, I knew I could depend on him to get us out of here, somehow.

Moments of silence passed as Tate whispered yelled. “My phone!” My heart quickened in pace as he was fetching for his phone in the back of his pocket. He handed it to me as I swiped it open,  reading a message. “What does it say and who’s it from?” he asked.
