Jack POV
I strolled into school and she wasn't there. Again.
Jace had told me what had happened, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned.
Why would her mum pick up her phone? Where was she? What the hell was going on?I felt crazy, like something was happening right in front of my eyes and I just couldn't pick anything up. Exams were in a mere fortnight and she was always complaining about one of her girlfriends not being in to study. She knew how important it was and encouraged all of her friends to be in to study as much as they could so.. where was that girl now?
Even her girlfriends were starting to worry. They told me how lessons were just quiet without her and how the teachers were whispering among themselves, trying to figure out what had happened. No one had been able to contact her since Jace had; every message ignored and every call sent straight to the answer machine.
When she walked into second lesson, everyone looked at her in stunned silence. It was like we had seen a ghost.
She was awfully pale and her eyes looked all sunken in and puffy like she had spent the last two days crying non-stop. She moved like she could snap at any moment. My heart sunk in my chest as I looked at this wreck that was one of my best friends, but she ignored everyone's gaze. She handed the teacher a slip of paper and muttered a sincere apology before treading over to where her girlfriends were sitting and casually whispered as if nothing was wrong "Are we doing an experiment?"
Eventually the class got bored- the new drama was over, so they resumed with her experiments and their talk. I kept trying to get her attention alongside Jace, but she never turned to us, simply getting on with her work.
She had another revision session to go to after school today, but me and Jace managed to catch her before she could run off again.
"Hey!" we called after her, having just ran down the corridor. She turned round and looked us worriedly, clutching her english book to her chest. I honestly thought she would just leave again, but she looked at us expectantly. Jace spoke first. "Where were you?"
"Are you okay?" I tried.
She looked so tired, like that question added literal weights to her shoulders. Then, she put on a graceful smile before replying assuringly: "Boys, I'm fine. Thanks for your concern but I just had tonsillitis for the last few days." She chuckled softly. "I'll talk to both of you tonight, but I have to go, English revision began 3 minutes ago." With that she gave us a wave and went off again, shoulders slumping when she thought we couldn't see her.
She's not okay.
