My Mom turned to look at me when she heard my arrival into the dining room and smiled when she saw me, “Kierra why don’t you sit next to Ethan,” She said innocently.

My Mom and Dad looked so clueless, they thought they were helping and I didn’t want to burst their bubble by saying otherwise, so with a tight smile I walked around the table and went to pull out my chair to sit down. But to my surprise Ethan quickly got up out of his own seat and pulled my chair out for me instead.

I looked at him, as I sat down at the table, watching as he gave a sweet smile to me before turning towards my parents to start up a little small talk as he took his seat as well.

“So Ethan I hear your quite new here in town, where did you and your parents live previous?” My dad asked him as everyone began to dig into the food that was placed in the middle of the table.

Ethan looked up, from his plate filled with food, towards the both of my parents and swallowed before answering my Dad’s question, “Yes sir, I’m new here. It’s just me and my mom, my dad was never in the picture. We moved from L.A., that’s where I was born and raised.”

My Dad nodded his head in response, before going into stats on the L.A. Lakers. My Mom chimed in a little after that changing the subject and asking Ethan if he plays any sports at school or has any hobbies.

“Actually yeah I’m real into playing sports, I love all types but my best played sport is football. I’m hoping to get on the varsity team for senior year since I didn’t move here in time for tryouts this year,” Ethan explain with another one of his perfect smiles.

They all went into more conversation throughout the rest of dinner while I just sat there. I had barely touched my food, to busy wondering about what Ethan had declared earlier before dinner. It was obvious, by the way he easily interacted with my parents and how much my parents were enjoying his company, that he had successfully won my parents over in only about an hour.

And that one fact had me wondering if he would be able to win me over just as quickly. I glanced towards him out of the corner of my eye only to see him glancing back at me with an expectant look. Furrowing my brows, I turned towards my parents to see them doing the same making me wonder if I’d missed something.

“Why is everyone looking at me?” I asked cluelessly only to be answered by a round of laughter.

“What? What’s so funny?” I said to everyone at the table even more confused and just a little annoyed at them for laughing at me for no reason.

My Mom’s laughter calmed first so she was the first to answer me, “Honey, we were looking at you because your dad had asked you a question and you had completely zone out on us. We have been trying to get your attention for almost a full minute,” She said trying to hold back another round of giggles.

I could feel my face heating up from total embarrassment. I hadn’t even notice I was zoning out this whole time. Covering my face with my hands I cursed my luck before peaking out the side of my hand to Ethan who was giving me a smug grin.

Ethan knew why I was so distracted right now and you could see that he was enjoying my embarrassment.

When I thought my face had cooled down enough, I removed my hands from my face and asked to be excused to the bathroom. My parents both nodded their heads in agreement and so I quickly pushed back my chair before standing up and walking out of the dining room towards the half bath that was in the hall.

Once I was in the small confined bathroom I turned on the faucet and placed my hands under the cool water. After soaking both my hands, I placed one on each cheek and stared into the bathroom mirror.

Why was I letting what Ethan said to me mess with my head. Just because he won my parents over didn’t mean that he could win me over that easily. I knew what Ethan was really like, the gentlemen act he was putting on for my parents wasn’t impressing me. They didn’t know how he acted towards me at school, they didn’t know anything.

With the newly renewed anger that I had towards Ethan, I grabbed a face towel out of the cabinet and dried my dampened cheeks before taking a deep breath and opening the door.

Walking back towards the dining room, I noticed that I couldn’t hear anyone talking anymore. Maybe they had enough of Ethan and told him it was time to go home, I thought to myself as I turned the corner to head back into the dining room.

What I saw though had me completely pissed and nervous at the same time. Sitting alone at the dining table was Ethan and my parents nowhere in sight.

Walking into the room more, I stood on the opposite side of the table from Ethan and glared down at his grinning face, “What the heck are you still doing here and where did my parents go?” I hissed and watched as he stood up from his place at the table.

Ethan lazily stepped around the table to stand right in front of me before finally speaking, “Well, they noticed the tension between you and I while eating dinner and your father decided to give us some alone time to talk over whatever we needed to talk about earlier than planned. They went for a drink somewhere and told me to tell you that they would be back in about an hour.”

I shook my head and began to walk around the house looking for them. I didn’t believe that my parents would just leave me here, with a boy of all things, by myself for an hour. I thought, when my mom said earlier that she would give us some alone time to talk, she meant they would stay in the other room while we went out on the porch and talked for a few minutes. Not actually leave me alone in the house with the guy.

When I had gone through the whole house and coming up with nothing but empty rooms. I reluctantly walked back into the dining room where Ethan still was. Stopping right in front of him, I pointed an accusing finger at Ethan’s chest, “What did you say to my parents to get them to actually leave me here alone with you?” I said harshly.

Ethan gently removed my finger from his chest and started to walk into the living room, “I told them the truth,” he said vaguely making me curious and a little nervous at the same time. What did he mean he told them the truth? I thought.

“What exactly is the truth, what did you tell them Ethan. If you told them anything about-” Ethan had turned to face me and cut me off before I could start completely yelling at him.

“Kierra, I told them exactly what I told you that day at the hospital. I told them that I cared about you and that I wanted to be there for, that I wanted you and that I just needed some time alone with you to make you see it,” Ethan stated.

"What...?" Is all I said.

I looked at him with my mouth wide open after he said that. I was speechless, he actually told my parents that he cared about me... Maybe I was wrong about him not being able to win me over easily. Because Ethan confessing that to my parents was unexpected and bold, something I would have never thought he’d ever do.

And for the first time tonight my heart softened just a little at the guy in my living room. Now I was even more nervous about how this evening would end not because of how different things would be between Ethan and I, but because I was afraid I would actually end up letting him in.
