As I was walking home the earth in front of me split open and erupted with fire. I jumped back with nothing more than slightly singed hair. A shadowy figure stepped out of the fire and formed into a bird sort of monster. Another one followed and soon there were three of these monsters surrounding me.

I twisted my watch and it transformed into a sword with a blue aura surrounding it. I held it in front of me while I moved into a fighting stance. My body knew what it was doing before my mind did. I lunged forward  and sliced one of the monsters into a pile of golden dust. I turned around and ducked just as one of them came at my had and flew past me.

The other one used that attack as a distraction and came at my feet, knocking me to the ground. I quickly got up but I was still too slow. Both of the remaining birds flew at me from different directions and I was powerless to stop it. I crouched down low with my arms above my head and awaited the attack but nothing came.

I looked up and saw a figure standing over me facing the monsters. He/she looked  back at me and I noticed a strong jaw, a big smile, and bright blue eyes all facing me. It was a girl, she had short-ish hair and it was bright red. My mouth hung open and I couldn't help but stare at her. Another person was fighting the harpies and as soon as I noticed this they had my full attention. I watched as they parried strikes and slashed at the monsters like they were just another annoyance to deal with and not an actual problem. I noticed that this person was a guy and he slowly turned around, revealing first his long black hair.

I jumped up and looked around, suddenly aware that I was awake now. I looked at my clock and saw that it was 6 in the morning. I silently got up and headed to the shower to rinse away the blood and stench of sweat mixed with beer.

After 15 minutes of scrubbing my skin and rinsing myself, I got out and dried off. I put on a plain black t-shirt and some light blue jeans with blue sneakers. Reaching up to my head, I felt my hair and it was surprisingly dry. I grabbed a brush and tried to run it through my hair but it kept getting caught  on the knots. Starting from the bottom, I slowly worked my way up and got my hair silky smooth in about 10 minutes.

I looked at the time, grabbed my backpack from my room, and ran out the door and to school. Once I got there I headed to the library to do my homework and was almost done by the time someone disturbed me.

"Hey look, it's that bluenette freak." I internally sighed at hearing her voice but ignored her and continued to do my work.

Terra frowned at me ignoring her attempts to ridicule me and grabbed my hair just like my father did to me yesterday and yanked it upwards. My eyes started to tear up but I mentally chided myself. I slapped her hand away from my hair and turned to glare at her.

There was a thick silence in the air as everyone watched, shocked on what just happened as no one had ever dared to do this before.

"My, my, my, looks like the little blue bunny got some backbone. You'll pay for this, and when you do, it'll hurt worse than anything we've done to you before." Chelsea said this with a falsely cheery voice, the same voice that made teachers trust her and that got her out of any trouble she has gotten in.

They walked away smirking, filled to the brim with confidence that they could hurt me. They couldn't, nothing could hurt more than my family's abuse towards me. Nothing could hurt me anymore. I packed up all of my books and papers from my homework and stuffed them into my bag, not caring anymore if they got messed up before I could turn them in. I walked out of the school and walked to a park.

I wandered the twisting paths that led into the forest, no longer caring if I missed a day of school. I kept walking deeper into the darkness under the leafy canopy that the tree provided. After what felt like an hour of walking I stopped and looked around to get a hold of my bearings.

Suddenly I heard a rustling sound to my left followed by growls and whimpers. I decided not to find out what made the noise so I ran for it, back the way I came and got out in less than 5 minutes, panting from the over-exertion, I fell to the ground, wheezing and trying to get enough air into my lungs.

I shot up from the ground, it had gotten eerily quiet and the rustling had stopped. It seemed like all life had froze for the moment. I glanced towards the forest and saw a huge shadow that seemed to move towards me. Not waiting for it to come closer I started off again and got to the road I use to walk home, actually, home sounded like a good plan. At least I would be alone and didn't have to worry about whatever was following me.

I walked down the road towards my house when the ground split clean in two right in front of me. On instinct I jumped back and looked up at my hair. Most of it was safe but the very tips got singed from the flames that came from the pit in the ground. The shadowy figure that I saw just moments before stepped out of the flames that rose from the dark hole in the ground. Two more stepped out and I had a feeling of déjà vu.

My left hand was moving on its own towards my other wrist. I looked down and saw the watch that my teacher had given me earlier this week. He said that I would need it but I didn't see how it could help now. I twisted it and felt it changing its form as it straightened and moved from my right wrist into my hand.

The sword that appeared in my hand grew warm and felt surprisingly light. It felt, almost  natural in my hand. I felt a slow pull towards the monster and so without thinking I lunged and sliced one to dust as easily as one might slice warm butter. I turned around just as another one flew at me. Instinct took over and I ducked, barely dodging the attack from the harpy.

The other monster came at my feet and knocked me down, I got up just in time to see both of the remaining monsters come at me from different sides. I crouched down and put my arms over my head in hope to protect myself from the brunt of the attack. After much longer than it should've took for the bird-like creature to come, I looked up and saw yet another strange figure in front of me.

Before I could move away, the person looked back and I saw a girl with a big smile and short, bright red hair. She had a strong jaw and bright blue eyes filled with emotion. As I stared at my rescuer, my mouth hung open from shock. Not only was she beautiful, she was also only a bit older than I was. I looked past her and noticed another person finishing off the harpies in a kind of lazy fashion. They parried and slashed at the monsters with a bored expression on their face. As the dark beasts fell into glimmering dust on the ground, the person turned and I saw that it was a guy.

He had long black hair and as soon as he saw us he smiled and walked over casually. As if he didn't just kill monsters or he wasn't wearing armor in the middle of the now-deserted street. I heard him talk in his surprisingly smooth voice, "Are you alright? Both of you."

"Alex, stop worrying about me. You know I can handle myself. And we got here before she could get severely injured." The girl replied back with a small shake of her head.

I glanced back and forth between them, confused about what will happen now. They both looked at me and the girl offered me her hand. "Hi, I'm Kayla."

I grabbed her hand and she pulled me up as I muttered a name that neither of them could hear. I could see their expressions shift from overly happy to slightly confused.

"I'm Alexander. What did you say? I didn't quite catch that." He looked at Kayla as if for confirmation that he said the right thing. What was up with these people?

"Riley, my name is Riley Andrews. Now how did find me and who are you?" I must've sounded scared because Kayla put a hand on my shoulder and told me that everything will be alright. I shrugged off her hand and for a second anger flashed on her face. She tried to hide it from Alex but he saw it and pulled her back. She whipped around to face him and the air turned thick, now filled with tension. I saw light around her fist as she punched him.

He grabbed her arm and used the momentum to pin her to the ground where she looked like she was stuck. I was wrong. She kicked him off like he weighed nothing and turned to face me. Kayla grabbed my arm without a second thought and dragged me away from the fight scene. Alex quickly got up and and ran to catch up to us. He was clutching his ribs, apparently Kayla was harder to beat than a handful of harpies.

I looked at them and couldn't help to think, who were these people? as they dragged me off to who knows where.
