I charged at an empousa and she jumped back before my blade could touch her. She smiled and flashed her teeth like a vampire's as I stood still from seeing her red eyes. She ran at me and sliced my stomach with her long fingernails.
I gasped as the sharp nails tore through my skin and left four gashes down my stomach. She tried to do that again but I was ready. As her hands got near me I sliced one of them clean off. She screeched and a yell from the empousa that Jess was fighting could be heard.
"Tammi!" Jess used the distraction to bring her whip down and wrap it around the empousa's ankle. Jess pulled and knocked her down. She threw a dagger and hit the empousa straight in the heart.
The empousa turned into a pile of dust and Tammi let out a high shriek of despair before turning to me with a vicious snarl on her face. She ran at me quicker than before and swung at me with her good arm. I parried and went towards her, trying to stab at her chest. The empousa was furious and didn’t notice my sword as she ran into it trying to get revenge on us for killing her friend. Tammi turned into a pile of dust just like the empousa that Jess killed.
I looked over at Jess and saw that she wasn’t looking at me. She was looking around like there was still an enemy. But we just killed them. The two… I turned around with realization as a dagger flew by me and hit the ground near the last empousa. She smiled wickedly and clapped her hands slowly. “Congratulations. You killed them. But do you think you have what it takes to kill me?”
Jess smiled back just as viciously. “We took down two already. One more is a piece of cake.”
I looked between the two of them nervously. Could Jess take another one? I winced and looked down at myself, dropping my sword to hold my injured stomach. The empousa ran towards me. She had the dagger that Jess threw at her earlier and looked like she knew what she was doing with it. She threw at what would’ve been my heart had I not ducked. The dagger sliced through the top of my shoulder. I fell to the ground biting back a scream of pain. Jess’s eyes widened and she glared at the empousa. She ran at the monster without a second thought and kicked the monster’s stomach.
The vampire-like creature hissed as she was forced back. “Remember the name Kelli. I’ll be the one to bring you down.” She ran back at Jess and was tripped by Jess’s whip. As Kelli fell face first to the ground she let out a humiliated screech. She got back up and charged at Jess again, this time managing to slice her leg. Jess used this opportunity to grab another dagger from her sheath and planted it into Kelli’s back. The empousa let out one more shriek before falling to the ground in a pile of dust. The wind came and blew the dust away, leaving our injuries as the only evidence of the attack. But it was painful evidence, leaving me on the ground. Jess stumbled over to me and collapsed on the ground by me, panting the whole time. We lay on the grass, I was going to give up and fall asleep but then I heard footsteps running towards us.
The person muttered some cuss words causing me to laugh slightly. I was too low on energy to look up so I just ignored the person who came to us. Jess cussed loudly at the person. “Why are you here?”
“Nice to see you too rainbow.” So Jay was the person who came. I heard him sigh. “What am I going to do with you? Can either of you walk?”
“Well she got hurt pretty bad. My leg got sliced up but I should be able to. You’re going to have to carry her.” Jess sounded resigned, her voice strained.
I felt Jay pick me up and I didn’t bother trying to do anything. The constant monster attacks were taking their toll on me. Jess walked beside him, slightly leaning on him, “I swear if you mention a word of this I will literally kill you.”
