chapter song: Dollhouse by Melanie Martinez.

"If there is color change, there is a chemical reaction, if there's a chemical reaction, congratulations you've made an one hundred on your lab assignment." Ms. Fisch says.

I pour the orange liquid into the clear one and gently rotate the test tube to mix. The mixture turns purple and gets slightly warmer in my hand.

"How come yours changed and mine didn't?" The guy standing across from me asks, I quickly notice his American accent. I slightly roll my eyes and set the tube into the stand.

"Maybe because I did it right?" I say with a small smirk.

Ms. Fisch starts walking around and I can see her shake her head at the group that almost singed their eyebrows off. She walks over to me and a small smile places itself on her lips. "Good job Miss Stein, one hundred again." She says.

I smile and fake laugh.

"Now, clean this up and I'll let you head early to lunch." She says. I nod and start cleaning.

"As for you Mr. Portman, eighty-five. There is a slight color change, but not enough like Vivian's." She says to the boy.

I smirk as I wash out the tube. I place the tube back on the stand and take off my gloves and goggles.

I grab my notebook and pens before heading out the door.

The corridor is quiet, my soft footsteps echoing. I fish my phone out of my pocket and plug in my headphones. I hit play to a playlist and Dollhouse by Melanie Martinez starts playing. My feet stop on their own and I stare blankly down the empty hall. Unpleasant imagines of multiple types of dolls fill my mind, ranging from Barbie all the way to Chucky. My heart starts beating faster and my hands start shaking. A hand touches my shoulder and I jump, dropping my phone in the process, my head phones coming unplugged as well.

I whip around to the possible threat and see the Portman kid. I glare at him as I grab my phone. "What the hell is wrong with you!" I yell, trying to keep my voice down so the classes aren't disturbed.

"I'm sorry, you were...are you okay?" He asks suddenly. I feel a tear slip down my face and I forcefully wipe it away.

"I'm fine."

"How come I've never seen you around here before?" I ask, changing the subject.

"Oh, I just moved here a week ago. Joined school today." He says with a small smile.

The bell goes off and the hallway starts filling with people. "Welcome to Wales, and welcome to Oxford High." I say over the loud talking.

I catch a glimpse of pink hair and a smile reaches my face. "Come with me, Portman." I say and start walking to the brightly haired person.

"It's Jacob, Jacob Portman." He says behind me. "But I go by Jake." He continues as I push through people.

"Steph!" I yell. She yelps and turn around, her pink hair falling in her face.

"God dammit, Viv! Almost made me go into cardiac arrest!" She says and slaps my arm. She looks behind me and smirks. "And who is that?" She asks.

"Jake, he's new here." I explain. She smiles and pushes me out of the way.

"Where ya' from, Jake?" She asks. "Florida." He says. "That's the really hot state right. Hot boys come from hot states." She says. I roll my eyes and notice Jake's face go red.

"I-ehem, I have a girlfriend back home..." He says. "Whoa there! You thought I was hitting on you?" Stephanie says laughing. "Oh honey, sadly, I'm actually into girls." She says. His face goes even redder. I laugh and shake my head.

"It's lunch time, ladies. Let's go." I say.

"And so Shea kept going on and on about how I need to get more friends, and I was just like 'don't talk to me about friends when your only friend is me'!" Stephanie says and laughs.

I chuckle and stir around my instant mashed potatoes.

"Fuck, Katie in those pants is giving me all kinds of emotions." Steph says and bites her lip. I glance behind me to see Katie, one of the only other LGBT+ people in school, wearing jeans that are a couple sizes too small. I shrug and look back at Steph.

I look at Jake next to me and his mouth is handing ever so slightly open. "Hey, you'll catch flies." I say.

"Did she ju-"

"Yeah, so does that a lot. You know she's one of the biggest flirts in school. It's actually quite funny." I explain cutting him off.

"I have ears ya' know." Steph says and rolls her eyes.

"Well, listen to this. The other night I was taking to Stephen and he flat out asked me for nudes. What a fucking fuck-boy." I say and take a bite of a chicken nugget.

"Who's Stephen? If you don't mind me asking." Jake asks.

I look around and spot him, sitting next to Jess Cumberton, the biggest whore in school, maybe even in Wales. I cringe and look back.

"At 2 o'clock, he's sitting next to Jess, the biggest whore in Wales." I whisper. He looks to his right.

He looks back and shudders a little. I giggle and he smiles.

I grab my tray and stand up. Stephanie and Jake follow me to the trash.

I dump my tray and put it on the cleaning rack. Steph and Jacob follow my actions.

"Jake, Steph and I are going to hang out at her place for a while after school, you can come if you want." I say to him. He smiles and shrugs.

"Why not."

"Good, let's go get some fresh air." Steph says.

"I still don't get why Shea couldn't come pick us up." I say to Steph as we walk back to her house with Jake.

"She wouldn't pick up her phone, must be busy or something." Steph shrugs.

I look up to the cloudy sky and see a blue bird. A familiar blue bird.

"Holy shit." I mumble and stop walking as the bird lands on a light pole. It looks at me and turns its head.

"This is going to sound insane, but I swear that bird has been following me." I say and point at it. It squawks and flys off.

"It's a peregrine, a blue peregrine." Jake says and we start walking again.

"How do you know that?" I ask.

He simply shrugs, "my dad is a ornithologist, I guess he rubbed off on me."

Steph laughs a little and fishes the keys from her purse as we near her house.
