Dorothy, Grace and Toto were walking to the cornfield and then they saw two yellow brick roads going to each direction
"Now which way do we go?" Dorothy said
"Pardon me that way is a very nice way" someone said it
"Who said that?" Grace said
Toto was barking at the Scarecrow
"Don't be silly Toto" Dorothy said "Scarecrows don't talk"
"it's pleasant down that way too" the voice came again but the Scarecrow was pointed the other way
"That's funny" Grace said "wasn't he pointing the other way?"
"Of course people can go both ways" the Scarecrow said when he pointed both ways
"My, you did say something didn't you?" Dorothy said when they got closer to the Scarecrow
The Scarecrow shook his head no and then nodded his head yes
"Are you doing that on purpose or can you make up your mind" Dorothy said
"That's the trouble, I can't make up my mind" the Scarecrow said "I haven't got a brain, only straw"
"Well how come you can talk if you haven't got a brain?" Grace said
"I don't know" the Scarecrow said "but, some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't they?"
"Yes I guess you're right" Dorothy said "well, we haven't really met properly, have we?"
"Why no" Scarecrow said
"How do you do?" Dorothy and Grace said
'How do you do?" Scarecrow said
"Very well, thank you" Dorothy said
"Oh I'm not feeling all well" Scarecrow "you see it's very tedious being stuck up here all day long with a pole up your back"
"Oh dear, that must be terribly uncomfortable" Dorothy said
"Well, can't you get down?" Grace said
"Down? No, you see I'm.. well I'm" Scarecrow said
"Oh well here let me help you" Dorothy said as she went behind him
"Oh that's very kind of you, very kind" Scarecrow
Dorothy couldn't find a way to get him down so she said "well um, oh dear I don't quite see how I can-"
"Of course I'm not bright about doing things" Scarecrow said "but if you'll just bend the nail down, maybe I'll slip off"
"Oh yes" Dorothy said as she bend the nail down, Scarecrow slipped off, but fell down and part of his hay went off
Dorothy and Grace went to him as Scarecrow said "there goes some of me again"
"Does it hurt you?" Grace asked
"Oh no, I just keep picking it up and putting it back in again" Scarecrow said as he puts his hay back on his chest "my isn't good to be free"
He spins around and fell again, making Dorothy and Grace worry
"Did I scare you two?" he asked
"No, no, we thought you hurt yourself" Dorothy said
"I didn't scare you two?" he asked
"No, of course not" Grace said
"I didn't think so" he said
Then a crow came behind him, he tried to get it go away, it jumped on him, grabbed a piece of his hay and flew away
"You see, I can't even scare a crow, they come miles around just to eat my fields and laugh at my face" he said "oh I'm a failure cause I haven't got a brain"
"Well, what would you do with a brain if you had one?" Grace said
"Do? Well if I had a brain I could..." he said and started singing singing "If Only I Had A Brain"
After that he fell down and they went to him
"Wonderful" Dorothy said and she shakes his hand "well if our Scarecrow back in Kansas can do that, the crows will be scared in pieces"
"They would?" Scarecrow said
She nodded
"Where's Kansas?" Scarecrow asked
"What's where I live" Dorothy said "and I want to back there so badly and Grace wanted to back to her place too, we're going to Emerald City to get the Wizard of Oz to help us"
"You guys are going to see a Wizard?" he asked
They nodded and he asked "do you think if I went with two, this Wizard might give me some brains?"
"I couldn't say, but even if he didn't you'd be no worse off than you are now" Dorothy said
"Yes, that's true" he said
"But maybe you better not" Dorothy said "we got a witch mad at us and you might get into trouble"
"Witch? Huh, I'm not afraid of a witch. I'm not afraid of anything" Scarecrow said "except a lighted match"
"We don't blame you for that" Dorothy said
"But I face a whole box full of them for the chance of getting some brains" he said "look, I won't be any trouble because I don't need a thing and I won't try manage things cause I can't think, won't you take me with you two?"
Dorothy and Grace looked at each other and Dorothy said "why of course we will"
They got up and Scarecrow cheered "hooray, we're off to see a wizard"
"Well you're not starting out very well" Grace said
"Oh I'll try, really I'll try, really I will" he said "To Oz?"
"To Oz" Dorothy and Grace said and they went off
