Chapter Song: Midas Touch by Ellie Goulding ft. Burns
Bella's stomach felt heavy the next Monday afternoon.
She had to confront Jacob, though she wished she didn't have to.
He was late again, by ten minutes this time. His tardiness only fueled her resolve.
Finally, he showed up without a care in the world. Not even a smidge of remorse on his face. He was a piece of work. Why am I letting him get to me so much? The unanswerable question wouldn't stop plaguing her.
She watched him as he slumped into the chair next to her, not bothering to take out his books as if he knew what was about to happen. She looked to Angela for support, though she wasn't sure what her friend could do, but seeing her nod encouragingly helped. A little.
She cleared her throat to speak.
Jacob beat her to the punch, saying lowly, "You want to talk about Saturday, don't ya?"
Bella swallowed her spit, nodding.
"Well, go on." He slouched further down, stretching his long legs under the table and crossing his arms behind his head.
She wanted to tell him to shove it where the sun didn't shine and leave her be with the way he was acting. He obviously didn't really care about how she felt or else he wouldn't be acting this way. He was so uncannily opposite of Edward. He hard and unyielding while Edward was kind and open.
Words eventually found her mouth again. "Why did you do that?"
"What?"
She breathed deeply through her nose, nostrils flaring. "Singing that song."
He half shrugged; a full one surely not worth his energy. "It was part of the set. Trust me, I didn't choose it."
She looked away from him, too angry to focus on anything. He was being difficult on purpose. What she'd done to him to deserve being treated like this was beyond her.
"Fine," she spat through her teeth, slowly getting louder. "Then why were you staring at me the entire time."
This time he didn't have an answer. He stood up, grabbing his bag. "I'm not dealing with this." Then he was gone.
Bella blinked at the door he exited before looking at Angela who wore the same nonplussed expression as she.
She debated for a moment before grabbing her bag and going after him. "Jacob, stop!"
He wouldn't, just kept walking until they were both outside.
He wasn't walking towards a car or truck but a motorcycle away from the senior parking lot.
She stopped, finally realizing they were alone. Edward wouldn't be happy, but she had to talk to Jacob. Why she felt such an urgency about it? She didn't know.
"Why are you being like this?" She nearly screamed, barely containing herself.
He hitched a leg over the seat, standing with the powerful machine between his thighs, hands on the handle bars. "Like what? I'm being me."
She scoffed. "No you're not."
"You don't know me." His voice was aggressive while his face was almost vulnerable, finally his walls were cracking.
Bella kept her distance, wishing again that she didn't have to do this. She wanted to argue, but couldn't. He was right. She knew nothing of him outside of school. "You're right. I just don't understand what you thought was going to happen. Did you think I was going to leave Edward and jump into your arms? I'm in love with him. You know that."
