"Large black coffee." Ren spat as soon as he opened the door to the coffee shop.
"Creamer?" Ren just looked at the barista. "Sugar?" Ren raised his eyebrows and shot a threatening glare. "Any flavor shots?" Ren gave an exasperated sigh."Do you know what black coffee is?" Ren questioned. The barista just rolled his eyes and began making the coffee. While he was waiting, Ren scrolled through his Snapchat stories. He wasn't exactly sure why he had the app, it wasn't like he had streaks with anyone, and all the people he had added were people he just barely knew. He just liked stalking people, he assumed.
"Yo! Emo kid! Your emo coffee is ready!" The barista shouted. Ren rolled his eyes and put a five dollar bill on the table. Without waiting for his change, he stalked out of the store and headed for home. He drank his coffee while studying, it was about as bitter as his mood. His best friend stood up for his ex girlfriend, and now he was alone and she probably already had six guys' numbers. He needed to win this breakup. He just didn't know how.
The next day he just barely survived all his classes. He struggled through a Chem lab, Spanish test, and history research work. On his way home, he decided to stop for another coffee. He ordered another black coffee and this time the barista didn't ask questions. Today, Ren noticed the guy instead of just glaring at whatever object his eyes landed on.
The barista was actually pretty cute. He had bright ginger hair and piercing green eyes that stood out against his pale freckled skin. He was tall, not as tall as Ren--nobody was as tall as Ren. The barista was thin with lean muscles that made him look somewhat intimidating. The guy looked like a model to be perfectly honest.
But he called Ren emo. Therefore, Ren hated the ginger.
Ren grabbed his coffee, not noticing the 10 digit number scribbled on the cup, and sat down at a table to begin his English report. After about twenty minutes of trying to analyze Charles Dicken's Great Expectations, he pulled his beanie down over his eyes and quietly slammed his head down on the table out of frustration. He heard a small cough behind him and, with reluctance, peeked up from under his beanie.
"Look, you can be as emo as you want any other time. But if you're going to just sit in my coffee shop, try not to make the place too depressing." Ren took a deep breath, determined to stay calm."One, I am not emo--" the barista looked him up and down, obviously not believing him, "two, I bought something from this shop and now I'm just here to work on homework." Which was true, the amount of books and papers scattered around Ren's table easily proved that. "And three, I highly doubt you own this place, you're a teenager--no fucking way this is yours." Then, Ren heard a quiet snicker from behind the counter. He looked over and saw a tall, thin, blonde watching the couple. He rolled his eyes and waited for the ginger's retort. It never came. Instead, the girl behind the counter responded.
"Wow Hux, he got you good." She giggled. "You're right though, my parents own this place. Huxy just likes to pretend he's in charge." The barista just glared at her as Ren suppressed a smirk. The girl looked between the two, "you can come any time and stay as long as you like, emo kid." She smiled as Ren muttered something about not being emo.
"My name is Ren, and I'm not emo."
"Nice to meet you, Ben." The blonde responded.
"No. Don't call me Ben. It's Ren, with an R."
"Alright, cool. You and Hux both have cute, short, emo names." She squealed and received another glare from Hux.
"I am nothing like this emo kid, Phas."
"Call me emo one more time--" Ren warned.
"Look at you, you're emo." Hux turned on his heel and walked away. The girl walked out from behind the counter and sat down next to Ren.
"Don't mind him, he's a little hot headed. I think it's the red hair." She mentioned with a giggle. "I'm Gwen Phasma. My friends call me by my last name mostly." Ren muttered back a hello and began to pack up his school work. "Hey is that Great Expectations? I loved that book!" Ren paused. "I got a 98 on the essay I had to write for it. English is my only good class. Huxy is the nerd." She laughed and glanced at him. "I can help you with that essay if you want." She took a post it note off of Ren's stack and wrote her number on it. "Just text me if I'm not in the shop and we can work on it together." She shot him one last smile and walked back to the counter. Ren slipped the post it note into his pocket, grabbed his bag, and started for home. On his walk, he contemplated whether Gwen was flirting with him or just making up for Hux's rudeness. He decided that she was just being nice. No girl has ever flirted with him. In fact, the only reason him and Rey ever got together was because their parents were close friends.
