The New Kid

A few uneventful weeks passed. Rey was flirting with some new kid at school, Luke. Finn was off making out with Poe every chance he got and was constantly wearing Poe's jacket. They were the couple that needed everyone to know they were a couple. Ren hated them. The thing was, Ren was still alone. He felt constantly watched, as if he should be flirting with a new girl, or hanging out with a new group of friends. But he wasn't. It wasn't that he gave up, he just wasn't very social. He just didn't feel like putting in the effort of meeting new people. So, he stayed alone. That is, until a new kid showed up.

Ren was taking his normal nap during history first period when he heard the principal. Principal Snoke would easily behead him for sleeping. So he casually lifted his head, hoping that he looked like he was just daydreaming. He eventually looked towards the front of the room and noticed his history teacher speaking to a boy. This particular boy was familiar to Ren. The vibrant red hair, bright green eyes, pale skin with light freckles--it was the snippy barista. Ren groaned softly and put his head back down on the table. "Well, I guess you can go sit next to Ben there." The teacher instructed.

Completely from instinct, and to show that he was in fact awake enough to participate, he mumbled, "It's Ren, Ms. Kanata."

"Sweetie, I can't hear your mumbling if you have your head down. I mean, I can barely hear it normally. Please don't scare off the new boy." Ren rolled his eyes and picked his head up.

"I promise I'll be nice, as long as he doesn't bug me." He replied with an extreme lack of sincerity or emotion. He watched the barista move towards him, then pause for a second. It was such a slight motion that Ren wondered whether or not he imagined it. He thought maybe the barista would remember him, then decided that he didn't. When the student sat down, Ren introduced himself to avoid a scolding from his teacher. "Hi, my name is Ren. I sleep during half this class, please don't bug me before nine a.m. Thanks." Then, he put his head back down on the table.

He heard Ms. Kanata scoff at his unpleasant greeting, but he wasn't bothered for the rest of class. When the bell rang, Ren headed to his next class, hoping he would have some extra time to work on last night's homework. While sketching a very terrible ellipse for math class, he heard a cough behind him. Ren paused his pencil, waiting for the person to speak.

"Do you have any notes from the beginning of the history chapter?"

"No. And I told you not to bug me before nine a.m."

"It's actually 9:01." Ren sighed.

"I don't take notes in that class. I sleep."

"How do you pass?" Ren was saved from answering the question by the second bell. Ren's english teacher, Professor Yoda walked in as the last bell chimed.

"Oh, Armit-" He started when the barista cut him off.

"No, just Hux, thanks." Everyone had been seated while he stood there, reluctant to sit down next to Ren.

"Hux, I apologize. Found a friend already, I see. Open seat for you, there is." the teacher gestured to the open desk next to ren. Hux sighed and sat down. The class was dull and pointless, and Hux zoned out of the entire lesson. He glanced over at Ren who appeared to be taking avid notes. On closer inspection, however, he was just doodling. Hux rolled his eyes and turned back to the board. "Mr. Hux, the question, you will answer." Hux blanked. He forgot the topic; there was no way he was going to make a fool out of himself on his first day.

"Well, I personally believe--" Hux breathed a sigh of relief when the bell cut him off.

"Finish this discussion tomorrow, we will."
