Chapter 29

Iona's POV

As Aleks and I head up to the house, Jim and Maria are heading out. "We'll be gone for three days." Maria shouts as she fast walks to the car, they must be running late.

"But I have graduation in two days, what am I supposed to do with the kids?" I shout back.

Maria sticks her head out of the car window. "You'll figure something out sweetie, you always do," with that they pull out of the driveway.

"Looks like they are just going to have to come home to an empty house," I shrug my shoulders at Aleks and walk into the door. Jack is walking towards be holding Adeline out in front of him.

"Iona, do something with her, she stinks," Jack whines.

"Oh my gosh," I say horrified. I hurry up and take her out of his hands. I turn to Aleks. "I have tons of bags in my closet. Can you just start packing clothes into them?" Without hesitation he jogs up the stairs to my room while I go change Adeline's diaper.

After packing overnight bags for each kid I bring everything to the front door. Aleks is coming down just in time. He carries five full duffle bags.

"Did you get everything?" I ask, taking a bag from him.

"Everything except furniture, I even found a box of condoms," He laughs.

"Well you would be the one who left them here," I say cracking a smile. It was so easy to laugh and joke with him like the last three months didn't even happen.

"What's a condom?" Jack asks. I snort with laughter hearing the word come out of his mouth.

Aleks answers his question. "Well Jack, it is a safety tool," I burst out laughing at his explanation.

"Oh by the way we need to stop at the store, Maria didn't even bother to buy anymore diapers so we're out." I say after I stop laughing.

"Ok that's fine. Come on guys, let's go." Aleks says leading everybody to the truck.

After we pick out the diapers and get some juice boxes for the kids, we head to the checkout line. Adeline is sitting in the front of the cart and Aleks is holding Megan because she didn't want to walk. Jack, being five and one year older than Megan, just held onto the cart and walked beside it.

I put the pack of diapers and juice on the table and let the lady cashier ring the items up.

"You guys have a beautiful family," They older lady says, looking at me and Aleks. Aleks opens his mouth but doesn't say anything. Instead he looks over at me with a look that says Do we correct her or...

"Uh thank you," I smile sweetly at the lady. She hands me the sack and we leave to head out to the parking lot.

When we get to the parking lot, Aleks tries to put Megan down. "Megan I'm going to let you down now," When he tries to let her down she holds on tighter and whines.

"Megan come on I need to let you down," He pleads with her. He pulls at her again.

"Stop! I don't want down," Megan yells, kicking her legs against Aleks. Aleks tried to be sweet and patient but I could see his patience snap when she started kicking.

"Megan stop it right now!" He says angrily. That just makes her kick even more. He finally uses all of his strength and sets her on the ground. She takes off across the parking lot. Of course he takes off after her. When he catches up and grabs her by the shoulders and whirls her around so that she is looking at him. He is shouting at her so I can still hear him. "We do not run around in a parking lot. You could have been hit by a car! Now stop being a brat and do what you're told!"

"You're not my dad!" She says trying to kick him.

"Iona and I are in charge of you for the next three days so you will do as I tell you," She tries to kick him again. "That's it, you're going to bed right when we get home because we do not kick people. How would you like to be kicked?" He doesn't wait for her answer. He grabs her by the arm and halls her across the parking lot, back to the truck.

I just finish putting the other two in the back seat when they are back. Megan is crying when she gets in.

"Look I'm sorry, I know I'm not her parent but-" Aleks starts to apologize.

"Don't apologize. If you weren't going to do anything I sure as hell was," I tell him outside of the truck. "Their parents are never around so they are never disciplined, but it is ok if we do because if we don't they are going to be brats forever." "You did good," I say rubbing his back. He weakly smiles and gets into the truck. I do the same.

Megan is crying the whole way home. I turn around in my seat. "Megan stop cry right now, it's getting really annoying," I give her a stern look. She only stops crying by the time we pull into the driveway of Aleks' house... well my house now too! I grab Adeline and the sack and walk into the house and Jack gets out and follows me. Megan follows Jack and Aleks makes his way in last. Aleks goes into his room, slamming the door. I set Adeline on the floor in the living room and tell Jack to watch her.

"Megan let's go get ready for bed," I tell her. Immediately she starts crying again. I grab her bag and her and carry her up the stairs. I go into the empty room and see that there is a crib in here. Well, how convenient.

I start to make a blanket bed on the ground for Megan. I get her dressed in her pick flowery nightgown. When she sits on the "bed" she says in between sobs, "Why is Aleks so mean," it crushed my heart the way she said it. I go and sit down beside her.

"Megan it's because you weren't listening. You can't just do whatever you want to do. We are only trying to keep you safe. You can't hit and kick and cry whenever you don't get what you want because then that makes me and Aleks angry. So it's better if you just listen to what we tell you, okay?" I say it all in a soothing voice. She just nods and lays in her blanket bed. I stand up and head for the door. Outside in the hallway stands Aleks. His face is pained.

"You heard her didn't you?" I ask.

"She's never going to like me now," He says sighing. I motion for us to walk back down stairs.

"I know a way you can make things better," He raises his eyebrows like he's interested to know. "There's ice cream in the freezer. Make you and her a bowl and take it up to her and eat it with her and then explain to her why you did what you did. Make her understand," He nods and heads for the kitchen.

Aleks is up there for about 20 minutes when I hear the stairs squeaking. He comes down holding Megan on his hip. She lays her head on his shoulder, sniffling. I smile and walk over to them. I reach for Megan and take her from Aleks. He takes the empty bowls to the kitchen.

After a couple hours of TV, all the kids are asleep. I carry Megan upstairs and Aleks carries Adeline. Jack fell asleep in the spot he's sleeping in.

"Well, that was fun," Aleks says sarcastically, while walking back down the stairs.

"I know, I know but I swear she will be an angel tomorrow, she always is after a big tantrum like that," I reassure him.

"Well I'm just ready for bed now," He says walking into the bedroom. I follow him in. This time I change in front of him but only because I like the underwear I have on. He just strips to his black Calvin Klein boxer briefs and hops into bed. I go back upstairs to wash my face and when I come back he's already asleep.
