"Tell me it's not over, tell me it's just a phase, tell me it's not over, tell me it's just a stage," the lyrics spill out of Matt's mouth early the next morning as he sits on the living room floor, music sheets spread around him in piles. The pencil in his hand keeps scratching away at lyrics, then chords, then a bunch of editing he makes.
The soft humming of his voice keeps me company while I sip my coffee and browse thoughtfully through magazines.
"Did you know Kim Kardashian's on the front cover because she gained 7 pounds?" I giggle, informing Matt on the hottest gossip. The glossy pages in front of me are full of pointless shit that people -- myself included -- seem to enjoy reading so much that they never run out of business. The racks of magazines that sit in every store in the country at the checkout line are too tempting. Every time I enter the store I tell myself "Not today, Elliot. You are not buying another pointless magazine." And then I leave with two.
"Wow, this is even bigger than the time she lost four pounds!!!" Matt mocks sarcastically before throwing me a smirk and continuing his guitar strumming.
"I still have to show you my surprise today, you know," I admire the pretty boy as he stretches deeply and yawns dramatically.
"I know, babe. I'll be ready in like twenty minutes? What time's the flight at, El?"
"Twenty minutes doesn't seem enough for a diva like you," I stick my tongue out playfully, ignoring the glare he shoots me, "The flight is in four hours, so we have to be quick."
"Oh, we'll be quick alright," he mumbles before leaping towards me and picking me up, carrying me towards our bedroom.
---
"Turn left," I tell Matt nervously, wondering if he's noticed the place I've brought him yet.
"Okay," he says quietly. He's definitely figured it out by now.
"You introduced me to your mother, I figured I should introduce you to my parents," I smile slightly before getting out of the car and taking in the cemetary around me.
Ever since my parents' burial, I've hated cemetaries. Passing by them gave me bad memories I didn't want, thinking about them gave me shivers and being in them gave me nightmares. Matt must have sensed my nerves as we walked quietly between the headstones because he pulled me closer to him in a side-hug attempt.
"Here we are," I finally speak, "This is my mom, Maria, and my dad, Robert."
What Matt does next surprises me. He sits down on the cold ground and begins to talk to my parents.
"Hi there, I'm Matt. I really like your daughter, you would be so proud of her if you were here today. She's going to do great things in the future and I hope I'm always with her to watch. We leave for America today, I'm excited to spend time with her. She's so beautiful, I imagine you both contributed to that. And her smile could fix all my problems, I'm sure of it. I hope she's making you proud," he finishes his chat with a small smile.
