Luke

I crept toward the window, opening the curtains a little bit before carrying Darcie and grabbing her bag hurrying out the room. It was seven o'clock, but I didn't want to take the chance of Darcie being an alarm clock for Shannen, so I decided to leave early.

She was burning up around five am, so I made sure to call her mom, and leave her a message about Shannen missing school. I tried calling my mom to stay home, but she already left for work, so I decided to take a big step and call my brother.

He left with Dave, leaving my mom and I to fend for ourselves. He took all our money, and a week ago, he comes back begging for forgiveness. What a dick move.

I punched the number posted on the fridge, placing the phone on speaker since I was feeding Darcie breakfast.

"Hello?" He picked up, his voice sounding unsure.

"Jack, it's Luke and I nee-"

"Anything, Luke!" He cut me off, excited that I was speaking to him.

"Shannen is sick, I need you to watch her while I go to school, key is left in the pot." I told him, checking Darcie's diaper for the last time, and heading out the door with my backpack and Darcie's pink back swung on my arm.

"I'll be there in twenty, are you okay?" He asked me, I heard shuffling in the background, Jack and Dave lived in the actual buzzing town twenty minutes away from here, so I guess he was preparing to leave.

"As always." I ended the phone call, hurrying to my old black convertible, tossing my backpack and Darcie's stuff in the backseat. I glanced at the electronic baby, unsure on where to place her so I opened the passenger seat door, and buckled her up right next to me.

It was awkward to say at least to ride a car with a fucking baby doll that kept giggling, at one point, I had to shove a baby pacifier up her mouth to shut her up. I knew she wasn't really Shannen and I's baby, but she reminded me of her mother a lot. She had brown hair, and was definitely annoying, I guess the baby got the blue eyes from me, it matched well with her hair.

I parked my car on the parking lot, receiving a text from Jack saying that he's almost at home. I shoved the phone back in my pocket, annoyed with myself for calling Jack.

I parked farther away from school as usual, since I was carrying a doll and a pink bag with me. I placed my hood on not wanting to be recognized as I moved along the hallways, trying not to attract attention.

I headed to my first hour early, setting down Darcie, and readying her milk.

"I didn't know you were capable of such responsibility, Mr. Hemmings." My maths teacher, Ms. Hilldom said. She walked towards me, watching me as I fed Darcie her milk.

"Her mom is sick, so I thought I should take Darcie." I answered nodding at her curtly, it was awkward to say the least, that I was speaking as if Darcie was a real child.

"You're a fantastic father then, Luke." She said smiling at me proudly.

I shook my head at her compliment thinking off Michael telling me about the shit-load responsibilities Shannen already had.

"I'm crap at this, I left Darcie by herself twice, almost killed her more than twice, and her mom is sick because she hasn't slept!" I yelled, angry more at myself than at Ms. Hilldom.
