If you are curious what all the characters look like I made a little edit to help you out (: Enjoy xx
Walking out onto the shriveled winter grass, I was surprised to feel the radiating sun beating against my paled skin. Spring was approaching, which lifted my spirits even more than the current sounds of my smooth, humming engine.
"We figured it out Maddie!" Bryce shouted as I ran over to the two boys, handing them each a water bottle and a sandwich. It was the least I could give them after the hours they have been working on my car since we got home from school. Jonah rolled out from underneath my car, his dark hair strewn over his greased covered, soft facial features and mesmeric bright blue eyes, which were more pronounced now that his glasses were off, matching the airy spring skies. He stood up, rubbing the grease off his hands before taking a plate from me. Jonah handed Bryce a plate and the three of us sat on the driveway to enjoy our snack.
"Thank god I have genius friends. You guys just saved me at least a hundred dollars," taking a bite of my sandwich I realized it was one of the first times I had seen the boys in plane t-shirts and jeans. They were normally always in a sweater or polo and chinos for school. Even when we hung out they were semi-dressed up. I liked the greased up nerds.
"Anything for you," Bryce smiled, his dirty blonde curls danced lightly in the chilled spring wind. "You can pay us by giving us the answers to that history packet," he offered, turning off my car and throwing me the keys.
"Deal," I smiled, "Are we still up for our ice cream date tomorrow?" I questioned. The three of us had begun to spend more time with each other outside the confined halls of the misery that is school. It was nice to have friends that understood the pressure of junior year, and were there to keep it memorable. Don't get me wrong, Ashton is probably the closest friend I have, but these two kept me sane during the day, and in the middle of the night when we are cramming for a big test. Their constant teasing, and cheesy pic up lines never ceased to make me smile.
Jonah is a varsity soccer player, surprising for someone who spends their free time reading textbooks for fun. He was friends with all the jocks, without them having to use him for his homework. Bryce on the other hand was your typical nerd. He wore the sweater vests, his hand never left the air in class, and when he wasn't working he was playing videogames up in his room hidden from the outside world. Almost like a smart, sophisticated version of Michael.
Jonah sighed, shaking his head, "Coach wants to meet with the other captains for next year after school, so count me out," he apologized, trying to hide his proud smile.
"Your captain?! Oh my gosh that is so exciting!" I screeched, clapping my hands excitedly making his smile grow wider than humanly possible. Bryce patted him on the back in congrats. "You sir have just reached a new level of coolness," we laughed, "too cool for us," I joked, Jonah gave me a playful push.
"Yeah and I have to tutor a middle school kid right before dinner," Bryce shrugged.
"Awh that is actually adorable. You could totally be like his new buddy," I rambled on. Children were my weakness.
"I'll be his buddy if and only if he does his work," he raised his eyebrows, "or bribes me with Pokémon cards," he laughed. We chatted on while we finished our sandwiches, rehashing how ridiculous our calculus substitute was, and complaining about the AP exams coming up next month. Just as the boys were getting up to leave, my mother's car pulled in the driveway. Jonah frantically tried to wipe the grease stains from his t-shirt, and Bryce stood up next to me.
"Don't worry we will swoon her with our charm," Jonah joked in my ear quietly, while putting his thick framed glasses on. They may tone down the twinkle in his eyes, but they define his cheekbones, and harden his jawline.
