Finn and Millie entered the high school gymnasium much as Mike and Eleven did on the penultimate episode of Season 2. Finn's hand was tightly wrapped around Millie's waist. The music of the most popular, contemporary love songs perfect for slow dances wafted through the air. The dark blue lighting created the perfect, relaxed atmosphere.
Finn Wolfhard was the most easily recognizable figure in his school. Millie Bobby Brown was by far the world's most famous thirteen year old. As they walked towards the dance floor, it was akin to seeing a King and his Queen walk to the middle of a crowd. Everyone parted to the side to give them space. Finn looked around him, and smiled at his friends and schoolmates, signalling that such politeness was unneccessary. Millie, accustomed to people acting starstruck around her, similarly put them at easy by waving to them and inviting them back to the middle of the floor.
A new song was beginning to play in the gymnasium. It was Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud,". Finn pulled Millie closer to his body, and wrapped his hands around her waist. Millie looked up at Finn and put her hands around his neck. She noticed that many others were looking at them, whispering, "So they really are together?"
Yes, yes we are together, everyone. And I'm proud of it, Millie thought to herself and smiled.
"Mills," Finn asked, breaking the silence between them. "I've waited for the perfect time to ask you something, and nothing in the world is as perfect as this evening or this moment. And no girl is ever going to be as pefect as you...Will you be my girlfriend?"
For the third time that week, Millie's face turned crimson red. It was as red as the red evening gown she was wearing.
"Yes, Finn Wolfhard," she said laughing. "I will be your girlfriend," she said, and saw Finn look down with those long eyelashes and blush. They were swaying to the music, but their faces were excruciatingly close to each other. They could feel each other's warm breath, until Millie suddenly decided to lean in and let Finn take the lead in the dance. She lay her body against his, and rested her head on his shoulders.
"Finn, who was your first kiss?" Millie asked suddenly. It was a question she always wondered about, especially since she had told the public on several interviews that her kiss with Finn in Season 1 was her first ever.
"Oh, uhm, to tell the truth, you were my first kiss ever," Finn whispered. "Shhh, don't tell anyone I told you that."
Millie looked up all of a sudden. "Finn Wolfhard! Did you just lie to the world by telling them that you had kissed someone else before me?" She began to laugh and started hitting him playfully on the chest.
"Well, at first I told you that I was experienced to make you feel more comfortable about it. You know, I thought you'd be more at ease if you thought I was guiding you through the scene. And, yeah, I thought everyone would think I was cool if I managed to get a kiss from a girl that wasn't scripted for television," Finn confessed.
Millie laughed and whispered into Finn's ear: "You are so strange, cute, and sweet Finn Wolfhard." She pulled back and placed her head on Finn's chest once more.
This was perfect, Finn thought to himself. If ever there was proof that heaven was real, this was it. It was the night before Valentine's Day, and the stars came out to shine and twinkle over the cool Vancouver sky. His favorite song was playing over the speakers, and his favorite girl--person--in the world, was his and his alone. Millie has never looked more beautiful than she does tonight. How can I ever let her know how much she means to me?
Finn lifted up Millie's face from his chest slowly but gently. He leaned in to kiss her, and for only the second time ever for the both of them, they were locked in an increasingly passionate kiss. Finn felt Millie's soft lips meet his. Millie was caught off guard at first, because Finn, who was so shy, could never have been the kind of person to make such a public display of affection. But Millie was stuck in that moment in time, and also felt that now was the perfect moment. She wanted to stop time and be with Finn forever. Her surroundings disappeared and faded into black, and all she could sense before her was Finn, gently kissing her with soft pecks at first, but increasing in intensity and passion with each passing second.
Millie decided to kiss back, and her hands automatically moved from his neck to his hair, which she played with. His hair was soft and perfect. It was always messy, but irressitibly attractive. Finn brought his right hand up to Millie's face, while his left hand found its way to her lower back, and pulled her even closer.
Without opening their eyes, they could sense that the people around them were beginning to notice now. But they didn't care. Finn and Millie were such young actors who were unfairly thrust into the unforgiving spotlight of Hollywood. They presented themselves--or a version of themselves--to the world. But they never quite could be Finn Wolfhard and Millie Bobby Brown, teenagers from Vancouver and Los Angeles.
Finn pulled back, gasping for air, after a minute of kissing. But Millie, wanting more, and finally letting go and surrending herself to her emotions, pulled Finn back to her by his collar, and locked his lips in for another kiss. Finn's lips were incredibly sweet and soft, Millie thought. He is a fantastic kisser, and I can do this again and again.
Finn found himself in sensual ecstasy. Millie was excruciatingly, painfully beautiful. Millions of fans around the world had a crush on her and would have given an arm and a leg to be Finn right now. But here he was, alone, privileged to be the one true love of Millie Bobby Brown.
The people around them were at first uncomfortable, but then rationalized the situation by thinking that Finn and Millie were putting on some publicity stunt. It was their way of getting attention--not that they needed it, for they were already so famous.
But none of them understood what Finn and Millie had gone through. They didn't understand how they had almost been torn apart by Sadie and Romeo. They didn't understand how the pressures of Hollywood force people to become versions of themselves they do not want to become.
They didn't understand what it meant to lose your way, and to find your way home again. And Finn and Millie knew it: they were home, where they belonged, in each other's loving arms.
Good actors knew how to control their emotions. Great actors know how to surrender to their emotions. But sometimes, the very best of them don't even have to act anymore.
There is sometimes a very fine line between reality and drama. Not much separates the two. That line is defined by love.
After the perfect kiss, Finn and Millie looked each other in the eye and danced the night away.
