While the boys and Sadie wandered off to Finn's trailer, Millie found herself exhausted. It is a normal feeling, after an emotional roller coaster. In her trailer, she put down her bouquet, chocolates, and card on the sofa she requested to be placed inside for whenever she wanted to take a nap.
She brought out her cellphone and opened WhatsApp. She and Romeo had exchanged contact details a few weeks ago, and chatted online every now and then.
Millie: Hey Romeo?
Romeo: Hey you!
Millie: Thanks for the flowers and chocolates. YES!!! See you in Paris? Merci monsieur.
Romeo: Excellent!!! I'll have my guy fix up everything for you. I'll call you up soon, ok?
Millie: Okay. Bye!
Romeo: Byeeeee.
She smiled, thankful and flattered that her crush of a few weeks--THE Romeo Beckham--would reach out to her and ask her to be his date to a Paris gala. And she had just confirmed to go on that date.
And yet she felt a kind of emptiness inside, a kind of disappointment that it wasn't Finn who asked her out, or gave her flowers, or made a public display of affection.
What was it about Finn anyway? He wasn't British like she was, but Romeo was certainly British. The Wolfhards weren't a famous family, but people around the world knew the name "Beckham." Romeo was an established model; athletic, good-looking, and rich. Finn was a pale, freckled, messy-haired boy who certainly had his own charm--but he was not destined to be one of the world's most desirable bachelors one day.
But Finn was special to; precisely perhaps, because he was ordinary and didn't think of himself as very special long ago--much like Millie. She never became famous until Stranger Things herself. And yet, Finn had begun to value and treasure her company and friendship before any of them became big in the first place. The life of a celebrity is full of pressure, an entirely different world that stripped one of the life of normalcy that even the most established actors and actresses craved for. Finn was like a refreshing oasis in the middle of a desert; he never let fame get to his head, and he loved her as Mills--his best friend--when the rest of the world only felt they knew "Millie Bobby Brown."
Oh Finn, Millie thought, why couldn't it have been you?
There were three knocks on the door.
"Who is it?" Millie called.
"It's Nat! Can I come in?" Natalia Dyer, who played Nancy Wheeler--Mike's older sister in the show--was like an older sister figure to Millie. They shared everything together, including Natalia's secret crush on her co-star, Charlie Heaton, who played Will Byers' older brother Jonathan.
"Sure, come in," Millie said. The door opened and in came Natalia with a big smile on her face.
"Romeo Beckham huh?" she teased. "Ohhhh, I bet you're going to make Finn so jealous."
"Wh-what? Finn's fine. He saw me run out with the flowers and chocolates, and I don't think he's ever liked me in that way. He was probably the guy who put Romeo's roses and chocolates in my trailer. That's why when we were filming the dance scene, he told me something was waiting for me in here. And then I saw the stuff from Romeo." When a girl begins justifying her denial like that, alarm bells ring in the heads of older sister figures.
"Whaaaat? You're crazy Mills. He TOTALLY looked like he was about to lose it earlier. He's probably jealous!" Natalia was the very first person whom Millie confided to about her crush on Finn. That was a year ago. As a matter of fact, Millie didn't even have to tell Nat. It was like she already knew. Natalia approached Millie after the Season 1 kissing scene and asked Millie, "So, how long have you liked him? You got your wish. Finn's your first kiss."
Millie tried denying it back then, but knew that girls have psychic connections. It was both a blessing, and a curse. In this case, it was the former, because Natalia had always been so supportive and understanding of her feelings.
"You really think so?" Millie asked. "I think Finn just views me as a friend. He's so introverted. He's probably not going to think about girls until he turns, like, sixteen."
When I was her age, I wasn't as oblivious, Nat thought to herself. "Yeahhh, but isn't it so obvious? Boys like Finn don't have to explicitly let a girl know about their feelings to let others know he likes them. Finn blushes so much when you're around! He always looks at you, he laughs at your corny jokes, and he's just so touchy with you.
Millie knew she was right. Deep down, she knew that Finn had always acted differently when she was around. She remembered how Noah would often drop hints, complaining that Finn took a week to reply to texts, but replied right away whenever Millie messaged him.
"I guess so...you know, I thought I'd be spending Valentine's Day with Finn. Well, at least I'm going to be in Paris, which is the city of love and everything. So that's okay," Millie said thoughtfully.
The door suddenly opened and in came Sadie.
"Sadie! How did you get in here!? The door was locked!" Natalia shouted.
"What? No it wasn't. It was open, so I entered," Sadie said innocently. "Can I join you girls? I wanna be included in your girl-only sleepovers more."
I know I locked that door, Natalia thought to herself. I heard the lock click. Does she have some kind of key?
"Sure, come and join us," Millie said as cheerfully as she could. She had never been very close to Sadie, and she wanted to make a stronger effort to get to know her better.
"Guys, you won't believe it. I just came from the boys' room a.k.a. Finn's trailer!" Sadie blurted out cheerfully.
"And? What's going on?" Nat asked.
"Well, Finn's kinda bummed that you said yes to Romeo Beckham's invitation. I think he was planning to ask you out or something," Sadie shared.
Natalia gasped, and Millie's jaw dropped.
Then why didn't he!? Stupid Finn, I can still go out with him if he wanted! And why didn't he tell me he was bothered when I asked him earlier if he was okay? Millie thought.
As if Nancy knew what he was thinking, she faced Millie and said, "No boy would ever admit in front of others that he was jealous Millie. Especially not Finn. He's too shy and respectful of you to make you feel conflicted between him and Romeo."
Augh! Stupid boy! Millie thought. "Then what should I do?"
"Maybe you can go talk to him?" Sadie suggested.
Millie turned to face Natalia, as if asking her older figure for permission to do so. Both her heart and her brain told her that talking to Finn was the right thing to do. Besides, the Paris gala? Yuck. That would have been full of snobs, high society, and pesky TMZ paparazzi who would blow up every single word that Millie spoke.
"I've got to get to Finn, and ask him about how he really feels." Millie said
"And what if he still won't open up?" Sadie asked.
"Then I'll let him know how I feel," Millie said. "This has all been so stupid."
Millie stood up and raced out her door.
