Finn turned away.
Millie's heart sank. Finn never turned away from her, especially when she had made eye contact with him. And she was confident that Finn knew they had made eye contact too. A hundred thoughts ran through her mind at that moment. Is he mad at me? Is he disappointed? Is he embarrassed? Does he even want to talk to Romeo, let alone talk to me?
Will he now look at Sadie the way he used to look at me?
Millie approached Finn carefully, and she noticed that the production staff who had been standing around idly had become aware that she was about to make contact with him for the first time since the incident. When Millie was standing a few feet away from Finn, she saw him scrolling through his phone. He's pretending to ignore me, stupid boy, she thought.
Finn was similarly feeling the heat of her eyes behind him. Why does Millie want to talk to me? I was thinking of talking to her, but later today and not right now. Does she know what happened between me and Sadie the other night? Is she going to tell me about her trip to Paris this weekend?
He felt a tap on his shoulder. "Hey," Millie said, with a slight shudder in her voice. Finn felt his knees turn into jelly and his heart turn into mush in an instant. So this is what it feels like, Finn thought to himself.
"He--Hey Mills...what's up?" Finn asked.
"Can we talk? Maybe in your trailer?" Millie asked courageously. She knew that by the sound of Finn's voice, he definitely still had feelings for her. She also knew that her own voice betrayed her. The nervousness and shyness that accompanied her words would certainly let Finn know that Millie had feelings for him too.
"Uh, sure," Finn said awkwardly, turned around, and started walking to his trailer at a brisk pace. Millie walked behind Finn from a safe distance and chuckled. How cute, she thought. It's like a seven year old boy trying to walk away from his crush in the playground. Finn effortlessly--and unintentionally--reminded people how boyish he remained to be.
Finn entered his trailer and heard Millie shut the door behind him. He looked at her and felt that familiar twist in his stomach. He used to think that butterflies in your stomach were ticklish and pleasant. This sensation wasn't--it was as if his insides hurt because Millie was so painfully beautiful to look at, and it killed him to think that she wasn't his.
"Finn, I need to tell you something," Millie broke the silence. Finn remained quiet.
"Finn, I know that you were planning to ask me to your dance in school, and I know that you got me flowers and chocolates and--"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Finn interrupted her. His face had turned a crimson shade of red, and Millie noticed that it was the most intense blush she had ever seen on his face. "Where did you get all this? Who told you? Noah is so dead right now."
Millie didn't know whether to laugh or panic. "No, no! It wasn't Noah! It was actually, a lot of people. Nancy told me you have feelings for me, and Sadie said you were feeling bad the other night, and Caleb told me about your plan, and I tried to call you but you weren't picking up because I thought you were busy and all..." Millie had said all this while trying to hold back the tears. She wasn't planning on crying during this conversation. God knew how emotional the past few days had been for every one of them. And yet here she was, in the presence of the one boy who knew her the most--who understood her the most--and she was opening his heart to him completely."
"Millie?" Finn asked. He was still blushing.
"Yeah, Finn?"
"Please don't do this...Please don't make me think it could ever happen especially with you and Romeo and everything. I can't afford to take you to Paris, I'm not as good-looking as him. He's a Beckham and I'm just a Wolfhard," Finn said, looking ashamed. It broke Millie's heart to see him like that. Millie knew how many millions of fans around the world would throw themselves at Finn. And here he was, feeling unworthy, because he thought he didn't have the heart of the one girl who mattered.
