Millie went through a miserable weekend. She couldn't get Finn out of her mind throughout the book signing, and he hadn't replied to any of her text messages still. Worst of all, on Sunday morning, Millie woke up and checked Twitter, and saw a series of tweets from Sadie's account, beginning with a photo of her and Finn that had been retweeted 7,800 times already.
Millie deduced that Finn had gone on an unannounced date with Sadie on the night that Millie received roses from Romeo. Like any girl, Millie felt the cruel pangs of jealousy rise within her. But what made it worse was how Sadie took a screenshot of Finn's stupid Snaps and dared to tweet it. She followed it up with a series of cheesy messages that read:
(1/3) Had the best time ever with @finnskata two nights ago. Your house is awesome dude!
(2/3) Thanks for being a real friend, and making me feel like I was truly part of the ST cast.
(3/3) P.S. You're a great hugger and...you know the rest (wink wink). Let's do it again some time!
When Millie read the tweets and post, she couldn't believe her eyes. She had to read the entire thread three times before imagining what must have happened. This is Ross and Rachel all over again, Millie thought to herself. Ross thinks they are on a break, and given the emotionally vulnerable moron that he is, gets drunk and sleeps with someone else, even though he's still officially with Rachel!
Millie fumed and half-thought about calling Sadie up right at that very moment. Oh right, Millie remembered. I'm not yet Finn's girlfriend. We haven't even told each other that we have feelings for each other. I even agreed to go on a date with Romeo this week. With all the self-control a thirteen year old could muster, Millie put her phone down and went through the entire day fuming and mumbling to herself.
When she returned to the set the next day for filming, she saw Finn and Sadie arrive separately, but decided to give both of them the cold shoulder. How could he, Millie thought. How could he hug her, and take her to his house, and do whatever it is you do when you're alone with a dumb girl like Sadie?
Millie was seated alone on a bench outside when she noticed a slender figure sit down beside her. It was Winona Ryder.
"Hey, Millie! What's up?" Winona asked. She was always truly sweet and very motherly. And the kids in the cast secretly shipped her with David Harbour.
"Hey Winona! I'm alright, how about you? Did you have a good weekend?" Millie replied politely.
"Are you really?" Winona said and raised her eyebrow. Millie is a great actor, but I guess even she can't act her way out of her feelings for Finn. "Listen, David told me what happened, and I want to give you some advice."
Oh no, she knows as well, Millie thought. Did the entire production crew and cast--or even the entire fanbase--know that she and Finn had come so close to finally confessing their feelings for each other, only to have their hopes dashed by cruel circumstances and mere dumb bad luck?
"Thank you very much, I appreciate that. Advice about what?" she asked.
"Listen, Finn definitely likes you. And don't you ever tell me that you don't like him back. It's been a year, Millie. Be kind to him, and kind to yourself. Liking him won't mean marrying him. It means giving your friendship a chance to deepen and become something different. It'll be the same--in a way--because you'll be best friends no matter what. But go with him to his dance. See how it turns out. In the worst case, promise yourselves to come out of it as friends," Winona said in the most motherly way possible.
Millie wanted to cry again. "I know, I know, I want to go to his dance, but I already committed to going with Romeo to his gala in Paris. And Winona! It's THE Romeo Beckham!" Millie tried to sound convincing, but she and Winona both knew she was only fooling herself.
"And why is THE Finn Wolfhard any less? Romeo Beckham might be gorgeous in the eyes of the rest of the world, but there isn't anyone more gorgeous in your eyes than Finn," Winona answered. "The perfect boy isn't who is perfect in the eyes of everyone else, but the one who is most perfect for you." It sounded straight out of a Hallmark Card. Then again, who knew what kind of stuff Winona read? She was known to be an inspirational speaker, albeit a very quirky one.
Winona saw Millie smile, and so she smiled as a mother would when she saw her own daughter was happy. "Come on," Winona whispered. "I have a surprise for you in my trailer."
A surprise? Millie thought and felt her heart jump. Is it Finn? Did David tell Winona to talk to Finn, to talk to me? Millie felt a combination of hope and dread. Winona's trailer wasn't very far from where they had been talking, and they reached it in less than a minute. Millie opened the door.
"Romeo!" Millie exclaimed. "Why on earth are you here? How do you know Winona?!"
Winona laughed. "His mom and I go a long way back. Victoria was a Spice Girl, and I had some pretty big movies back then. Romeo is my godson, and he's in town for a photoshoot. I asked him to drop by so the two of you could talk." Winona winked, so only Millie could see her.
"Yeah Millie," Romeo said, laughing. "What do you want to talk about? Is this about Paris this weekend? Oh it's gonna be great. I arranged for a trip to Disneyland, then a little shopping trip in the good part of Paris that you're gonna love, and--"
Millie had still looked on in shock. Nothing had prepared her for this encounter. It was so sudden, so poorly timed. She then wondered why Winona would bring Romeo onset all of a sudden, especially after her talk. Didn't Winona just tell me that even if Finn wasn't the most perfect boy in the world, he was the perfect boy for me? Millie thought to herself. But then again, Romeo's her godson. Why would she bring him here right after telling me to follow my heart and open up to Finn? Millie was terribly confused, and did not know what to say.
"Listen, Romeo, I--I've got to go to my trailer. Silly me, I forgot my phone, and I'd love to take a selfie with you right now," Millie sputtered out with a nervous smile. For the first time in her life, her acting skills had failed her. I think Winona brought him here so I could gently back out of the Paris trip. Why would she tell me to choose Finn's prom then shove Romeo into my face two minutes later? This was the best rationalization she could make.
Millie turned to leave, without even barely glancing at how Winona and Romeo took her lame excuse. Finn, I really need to find Finn, and tell him how I feel, and tell him I want to go to his dance, and bring him to meet Romeo, and tell Romeo that Finn and I have feelings for each other, and that I had to go with Finn to his school prom. Millie ran out of Winona's trailer as fast as she could.
But what if there's something going on between Finn and Sadie? Didn't they just kiss? Ugh, Sadie. I'm going to deal with that girl soon enough. There were so many questions, and she knew so very little.
Millie looked around the set. Around five yards away from where she stood, for the first time since their ill-fated conversation at the coffee table, she saw Finn looking at her.
