Lolita Kinnings walked across the streets of Detroit. Her long brown hair in a ponytail swinging in the cold winter air. She shook with the thought of anything bad happening to her. She got to the entrance of her school and floated into the library. She looked around and saw nobody she knew. As a result she strolled through the sections of the library.
"Lo." Someone said and she looked up. It was her friend Destinee and her friend Kimberly. She smiled and hugged them both.
"Hey D, Kim, what's up?" She asked looking around and they smiled.
"Not much girlie. We're just thinking about how awesome it would be if we didn't need men to make babies." She said and Lo chuckled.
"This is where I leave." Lo said and waved goodbye. She walked out the back doors and as she was moving to her class she got lost in her thoughts.
'Why don't I have any friends?' She sighed and rolled her eyes. Moving down the halls she saw this boy, his hair parted down the middle but his eyes sparkling like diamonds. She look in a couple seconds and then he looked over. She was so lost in thought that she didn't even notice him looking at her. His heart pumping faster. He looked away to check his schedule and saw that he had English for that block. Lolita checked hers and also noticed that she had English as well. She walked past the boy and he focused on her as soon as she did. He walked to class and noticed where she sat. He took the seat right behind her. He tried to figure out what to say but just found himself staring at the girl. He was going to go tap Lo when she turned around.
"Hi, I saw you in the hallways." Lolita said and he smiled dropping his hand.
"Hey, what's your name?" He asked and she grinned.
"I'm Lolita but you can call me Lo." She said and the boy smirked.
"I'm Marshall." He said and she smiled.
"Marshall, I really hate school- you wanna hang out somewhere?" She said quietly but loud enough for him to hear her. She asked and he nodded enamored with her. They got up and walked out into the hall. They dashed to the nearest exit and out to the street.
"Where do you want to go?" He asked and she smiled.
"Uh, anywhere." She said and they walked to the bus stop.
Two hours later
They walked to his place instead of catching the bus. He unlocked the door and smirked at her. They walked to his room and sat down on his bed. She looked at him sleep in her eyes and felt her heart beating faster.
"Marshall, what was your ex like?"
"She was beautiful- still is. I can't describe her, she's just really similar to me but we both are crazy so like that's why shit didn't work."
"Marshall." She said her eyes drooping down.
"Yeah?"
"I think your cute, I don't know what you're like outside of these past two hours but I just want your lips on mine right now." Lo said and Marshall laughed.
"Really? Me, I look like a dork and you want me to kiss you."
"Marshall, I can fix all your problems if you just kiss me right now."
"Can't I just get to know you? How many people have you dated?"
"Dated or fucked?" She asked and his eyes widened.
"Both." He asked and she smiled.
"One dude I didn't have sex with him though." She said and sat up. Marshall looked at her insecure and she grabbed his face and smiled.
"You're thinking about her, that's why you don't want to." She said and he moved her hand and pulled her face towards his. He kissed her slowly and with all the emotion he hoped he could give her one day.
"Despite this I want you to be my best friend. You hear me." He said and she nodded.
October 13 1997
Marshall found himself in a bar with a beer in his hand and Lo on his mind. It's been two years since their falling out she never left his mind. Everything that had happened and that he put her through had just fallen on his tipsy mind. He heard nothing but the muffle of the music at this point. He saw a couple of girls sit diagonally from him and sighed.
He heard someone clearing their throat behind him. He turned around his eyes focused on the girl he hadn't seen in a long time. His former best friend stood there, her hair in a bun, her nails broken, and a bruise on her shoulder. She was smiled and he stood up. He stuck his arms out and she wrapped herself into them and tears started falling out of her eyes.
"I made a mistake." She said and he looked at her to wipe the tears away.
"Sit down, let's catch up." He said softly and ordered her a drink.
"Marshall, I think we should talk about what happened that night." She said and his eyes widened.
"What ever is gonna make you want to be my best friend again." He said and rubbed her leg.
"Okay." She sighed.
Two years prior
"Marsh, how are you?" Lo asked laying down on his makeshift couch. He sighed and looked at her.
"It's rough."
"What." She questioned.
"I want to reflect on the day I met you all the time. I want to be able to kiss you like I did back then. I want to feel all of you-cause I love you." He said and her eyes widened.
"What?" She said and he repeated. She crawled over to him and touched his shoulder.
"Marshall, I would give you my heart if I knew she still didn't have yours." She said and tugged at his shirt. He nodded and his eyes watered.
"I don't want you if you don't want me." He said moving her hand. She breathed deeply and rolled her eyes.
"Marshall, I didn't say that. I'm just asking for consistency, is that too bad? If I'm gonna be with you-"
"You're not, you need to leave." He looked at her and she breathed hard.
"No." She said and got right in his face. He looked down and she pushed him down on the couch. She laid down on him and kissed his temples before he pushed her off.
"I don't want this either. I just want you to leave Lo." He said and she sighed.
"Why is it always her over me?" She cried and he frowned.
"It's always been her. You were too busy being a h-"
"Marshall, this is the end of the road. Her or me?" She asked and he looked down.
As they looked at each other in the bar, the music seemed to fade.
"What's been up with you?" She asked.
"I'm still trying to get my shit out there, I wanna blow up." He said and she smirked.
"I want to blow myself up." She said chuckling and he just grinned at her.
"Lo, I really miss you. I regret my choice all the time."
"So do you want me still?" Lolita asked sipping her drink.
"I do, everyday since then." He mumbled and softly grabbed her, planting a kiss on her cracked lips. She bit her lip in shame and looked at him.
"Marshall." She tears dripping and he continued to wipe them clean.
"Look, I love you still. Don't be afraid of me."
"It's Kim not you." Lo mumbled so softly he could barely hear her. His hands fell down to her leg and she felt a chill move up her body.
"She's not a part of my life. All I got is my daughter and now you."
"How is the kid?" Lo asked, her eyebrows folding under the pressure.
"She's beautiful, like you."
"Marshall, how do you compare your uber white kid to me?" She smiled and rubbed his shoulders.
"Because half of you can relate to me, and I missed you with a passion my dear." She looked at Marshall, her heart still fluttering.
"Are you okay?" He asked and she shook her head.
"I've been alone since you picked her. I skipped school with you everyday, I graduated on time still but I also let you do what you want. Go with who you want. Leave me. Have a baby with her." She looked down her hair starting to fall down her neck.
"Lo-"
"Marshall, I don't hate her. She always had something over you and Hailie is a priority always, I know." Lolita said and finished up her drink.
"Anyways, I need to be heading out. My number ain't change so you should call me sometime." Lolita mumbled and he embraced her kissing her cheek. He watched her leave and then followed suit.
Home
Marshall entered his apartment, and tossed his keys on the table. He laid down on the couch and started to think. He dug through the cracks in his brain trying to remember the number. The woman that he had loved since they day he met her, the woman who was going to give him her virginity and he turned her down, the woman who never got into a relationship with him officially because of his goals, the woman that would let him call her and talk for hours every time he and Kim broke up. The woman who's number he couldn't remember.
He sat up and walked over to the counter, bills littered all over it. He searched through the cupboards and drawers. He found several keepsakes. There were tons of cards from Kim and letters from Lolita. He looked at one marked October 17, 1994.
Hey M,
Lo here. I want to thank you for always being there for me and loving me. Thank you for always breaking my heart in the most obliterating ways. It truly does keep my heart shocked. I hope you have a beautiful birthday with your beautiful woman. I hope y'all don't procreate anytime soon, the last thing the world needs is another you. Anyways I love you and it seems like you've forgotten about me so here's all my contact info. Page me when you're leaving for work, I'm gonna come see you my dear.
With love, Lo.
He smiled as he dialed her number, his heartbeat raced. She on the other side of the line had been sitting by the phone as soon as she got home. Her back aching and her mind wandering if it was the right decision. When the phone rang on her side and picked up the phone slowly and brought it to her ear.
"Marshall?" She asked, this had happened two times already and she hoped it wouldn't be him, just so she could move on.
"Hey Lolita." He said breathing deeply into the phone, almost as if a weight was lifted off his stomach.
"I thought you forgot about me- again." She said and he chuckled. His heart had slowed down and he felt at ease now.
"I didn't. I forgot your number though." He said and then it was her turn to laugh. He just wanted to hold her and wanted more moments like that.
"What's been happening? Where's your girl and your spawn?" She asked and his mood and tone fell.
"She left a few weeks ago- are you sure this is what you want to talk about with me. I was never a good friend to you." He admitted and she sighed.
"I'm boring as hell Marshall. Your life is interesting." She said and he nodded before continuing to talk. For hours they talked about why Marshall's long time girlfriend left him, where his rap career was going and what they both had been doing in the past two years.
"I got this job at Gilbert's and one at K-Mart part time." She said and he laughed.
"Yeah? I still work there, I'm focused more on the music now than everything else." He stopped talking and listened to her breathing for a little while.
"Marshall?" She said getting his attention.
"What's up." He said.
"As your best friend, I think I want to see you more." He smiled and she reflected for a few moments before getting back into focus.
"If you can afford it, I think you should come with me to L.A." He said and she gasped.
"When?" He gave her the date and she grabbed a marker and circled three days to take off.
"Also Marshall?" She inquired.
"Huh?"
"I missed you a lot, when can I come see you?" She asked shyly. He grinned and thought for a few seconds before answering.
"I'll come get you tomorrow night, I got something already planned for us." He said and she laughed.
"You know I'm nobody special." She said and he scoffed.
"Now we're lying." He coughed and she started laughing louder.
"I'll see you tomorrow night then."
"Alright." With that they hung up, Lolita heading to bed and Marshall staying up to finalize the plans.
